Story
For more than a hundred years humans, dwarves, gnomes and elves lived together in relative peace. But times have changed, the uneasy peace is over and now the races once again fight each other - and themselves: dwarves are killing their kinsmen, and elves are murdering humans and elves, at least those elves who are friendly to humans...Into this tumultuous time is born a child for whom the witchers of the world have been waiting.

So enjoyable
Reviewed: 23-02-22
When I first started listening I thought I might not get on with the narrator. I was dead wrong. I hope that Peter Kenny is somewhere with his feet up and a satisfied feeling in his heart. The accents are excellent and the production and reading is FLAWLESS. This is hands down the best production and narration I’ve encountered. There is usually a weirdly pronounced word that jars or a duplicated section in most audiobooks, but not here. Peter Kenny and I guess the production team have done an excellent job. Obviously the story is good and engaging. I loved it all and don’t want to think about what I’ll do with myself when I have no more books in this series to listen to!

Story
On a hot July day in 1967, Odelle Bastien climbs the stone steps of the Skelton gallery in London, knowing that her life is about to change forever. Having struggled to find her place in the city since she arrived from Trinidad five years ago, she has been offered a job as a typist under the tutelage of the glamorous and enigmatic Marjorie Quick. Although Quick takes Odelle into her confidence and unlocks a potential she didn't know she had, she remains a mystery - no more so than when a lost masterpiece with a secret history is delivered to the gallery.

Enjoyable and exciting

An excellent story, evocatively written and well read, apart from some challenging accents that were occasionally distracting! I can't imagine how difficult it must be for one person to do so many accents.

A brilliant book, wonderfully executed. I love his authoritative, but never patronising, tone. it made me smile every time I got into the car and excitedly told friends and family some of the words I learned about.

Really Enjoyable

This is not the sort of book that I would usually pick up, but I really did enjoy it. Sophie Aldred narrates beautifully and does a great job of all the voices. Flavia, the main character is a young girl and the author manages to imbue her with both exceptional knowledge of poisions and insight while retaining her childish innocence, which works very well.
