Story
From the discovery of entirely new kinds of galaxies to a window into cosmic ‘prehistory’, Bothwell shows us the universe as we’ve never seen it before - literally. Since the dawn of our species, people all over the world have gazed in awe at the night sky. But for all the beauty and wonder of the stars, when we look with just our eyes we are seeing and appreciating only a tiny fraction of the universe. What does the cosmos have in store for us beyond the phenomena we can see, from black holes to supernovas?

Very poor and derivative. Certainly not for fans of Clarke, Asimov, etc. Good sci-fi has some basis in real science. Reads like Star Trek fan fiction...

Ishmael Jones is someone who can't afford to be noticed, someone who lives under the radar, who drives on the dark side of the road. He's employed to search out secrets, investigate mysteries and shine a light in dark places. Invited by his employer, the enigmatic Colonel, to join him and his family for Christmas, Ishmael arrives at the grand but isolated Belcourt Manor in the midst of a blizzard to find that the Colonel has mysteriously disappeared. As he questions his fellow guests, Ishmael concludes that at least one of them - not least Ishmael himself - is harboring a dangerous secret.

Story
Late October 1909, and the season of ghouls and things that go bump in the night has descended on the village of Littleton Cotterell. Lady Hardcastle and her trusted lady’s maid, Florence, find themselves hosting a colorful cast of actors whose spooky moving picture, The Witch’s Downfall, is being shown to mark Halloween. But things take a macabre turn when the first night’s screening ends with a mysterious murder, and the second night with another. One by one the actors turn up dead in ways that eerily echo their film.

Wonderful characters!
Reviewed: 08-03-24
Whilst overall these stories might be described as ‘whimsical murder mysteries’, two areas stand out.
Firstly, the wonderful characters, who are extremely likeable and whose back stories develop as the series progresses.
And secondly, the quality of both the writing and the plot. As a huge Agatha Christie fan my whole life, I rejoice in having found such a quality book series to keep my passion for murder mysteries (and great writing) satisfied.
Highly recommend.

Story
Why do smart people make irrational decisions every day? The answers will surprise you. Predictably Irrational is an intriguing, witty and utterly original look at why we all make illogical decisions. Why can a 50p aspirin do what a 5p aspirin can't? If an item is free, it must be a bargain, right? Why is everything relative, even when it shouldn't be? How do our expectations influence our actual opinions and decisions? In this astounding audiobook, behavioural economist Dan Ariely cuts to the heart of our strange behavior....

Story
For Dr. David Beck, the loss was shattering. And every day for the past eight years, he has relived the horror of what happened. The gleaming lake. The pale moonlight. The piercing screams. The night his wife was taken. The last night he saw her alive. Everyone tells him it's time to move on, to forget the past once and for all. But for David Beck, there can be no closure. A message has appeared on his computer, a phrase only he and his dead wife know. Suddenly Beck is taunted with the impossible—that somewhere, somehow, Elizabeth is alive.

Who cares what happens to these idiots....

I rarely write a negative review as books are a matter of taste and personal preference to a great degree, and I gave this a try as I like a good crime thriller, it had mostly excellent reviews and was free! Yet somehow I still I feel like I've been robbed.
The characters are completely one dimensional and cliched, and so, so stupid! Their behaviour beggars belief most of the time. Consequently, I didn't like any of them and was not at all invested in what happened to them.
The story is sold on being full of unexpected twists and turns. Well; maybe if this is the first book you have ever read, and you have absolutely no ability to read between the lines, there might be some surprises. Otherwise everything is signposted by big shouty neon signs. BET YOU DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING! (Yes I did.) AND YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT! (I already know what's going to happen next.)
I try never to give up on a novel, and I pushed through to the very end to see if it improved. It didn't. (I bet you saw that coming...)

Story
In Happy Derren Brown explores changing concepts of happiness - from the surprisingly modern wisdom of the Stoics and Epicureans in classical times right up until today, when the self-help industry has attempted to claim happiness as its own. He shows how many of self-help’s suggested routes to happiness and success – such as positive thinking, self-belief and setting goals – can be disastrous to follow and, indeed, actually cause anxiety. Happy aims to reclaim happiness and to enable us to appreciate the good things in life, in all their transient glory.
