Almost a book of two halves. The first being slow and unwealdy, the second being a heart pounding rush of excitement.

Story was gripping and managed a wide arcing storyline while still retaining a personal feel. So many twists and sub plots kept me riveted. I also never saw the actual reason before the last chapter

Excellently weird tale stretching across spacetime
Reviewed: 02-10-21
The first thing that struck me about this story was how good the narrator was. A good narrator can save a mediocre book, but in this case that certainly wasn't necessary. The main hero,Mike Redolfo was a well formed likeable character and I was expecting a simple colourful tale of him adjusting to his new reality after being abducted. The next chapter threw me a curveball when it started introducing elements from nazi germany and the plight of the jews. I worked out the connection quite quickly which was well thought out. Mike himself is a very likeable character even to aliens who instinctively trust him and assist him and I'm sure I would have done the same. I actually met the author at a comic-con in York, England and thought I'd give his efforts a chance and I wasn't disappointed. I look forward to more of the same

Story
The sun is bloated, diseased, dying perhaps. Beneath its baneful light, Shadrapar, last of all cities, harbours fewer than 100,000 human souls. Built on the ruins of countless civilisations, Shadrapar is a museum, an asylum, a prison on a world that is ever more alien to humanity. Bearing witness to the desperate struggle for existence between life old and new is Stefan Advani: rebel, outlaw, survivor. This is his testament, an account of the journey that took him into the blazing desolation of the western deserts and into the labyrinths and caverns of the underworld.

Good book but by no means his best work
Reviewed: 19-10-20
I am a huge Adrian Tchaikovsky fan after listening to his "Children" books but this one is a bit lacking in all respects. Firstly the narrator is annoyingly and persistently upbeat in his tone even though his present and future outlook is dire at best. Secondly, the story is incoherent and not routed in anything substantial. I know from previous novels that the final reveal at the end generally ties everything into place with a "Wow" moment but it didn't happen in this case. Also, a lot of time was spent developing the various characters but I failed to care for any of them. It felt like there were many events going on by accident and our hero Peter was just swept along like driftwood. Overall it felt a lot like a Terry Pratchet novel, too bad !

You'll stand alongside Charlie as he proves himself time and again by keeping his wits and being decisive in crisis, though each encounter leaves him more heavily scarred for it.

This was a masterful telling of the ordeals of some of the unsung heroes from WW2. I'm normally a sci-fi listener but had to follow one of R C Bray's excellent narrations. These stories really opened my eyes to the terrifying ordeal that these brave sub-mariners must have endured against the Japanese Imperial Navy. The series follows the characters struggling with their ancient boats and inferior weapons at the start of the war to their dominance at the end. The chapters are short and punchy but no less exhausting and compelling. I love Craig Diloue's work

Found this gem of a space opera by accident
Reviewed: 26-08-20
I was a bit short on credits so I needed as many hours as I could get and came across this little gem. The story structure was quite familiar and reminded me a little of Battlestar Galactica. The characters were quite militaristic and not fully formed but they grew on me quite quickly and the action more than made up for this. I liked the whole prophecy aspect of the story which made it seem that anything they did was pre-ordained. I also liked the political angle of the human politics that is also going on in parallel. overall, I think this was great science fiction epic worthy of anybody's listening time

I'm not going to spend too much time describing what I thought of this book but it just seems like this author is under contract to turn out a certain amount of output in a short contract period. I can't believe this is the same author that created The Forever series as his offerings now are just lazy and repetitive. For example, every time he need information about an adversary he just goes to some alien bar and bumps into a random character that knows exactly what he wants ! Come on, we deserve better if we're going to use our valuable credits on this pulp
