Story
A body has been discovered on the riverbanks of The Valley, a remote community in the hills of New South Wales. The gold mine at the heart of The Valley was once the lifeblood of this region, but it has been flooded for decades. Over the years, many have tried and failed to bring it back to life. Now, most believe the mine is barren. The victim is Wolfgang Burnside, deputy mayor - a champion of change or local schemer, depending on who you ask. He had been working on plans to take the Valley off-grid with hydro-power. Until he was poisoned, his body dumped in the river for all to see.

Enthralling yarn

Thoroughly enjoyed this story and its performance by Lochie Chapman. Initially I didn’t realise about the 2 different time lines. A physical book would have obvious chapter headings rather than a hasty spoken date. However it is an excellent story with lots of twists and turns. The book does require a degree of concentration as there are lots of characters some appearing in both times. As ever Chris Hammer has written an excellent book which was recommended recently as Crime Book of the Week in the Saturday Times.

It was a while since I had read the previous Rebus so had to listen to it again in order to find out how Rebus ended up in HMP Edinburgh.
Really enjoyed this new book and James MacPherson’s narration. The old cast makes their appearances including Fox and the story rattles along. The last chapter leaves you anxious to know what next …….

Story
Monochrome is a busted flush - an inquiry into the misdeeds of the intelligence services, established by a vindictive prime minister but rendered toothless by a wily chief spook. For years it has ground away uselessly, interviewing witnesses with nothing to offer, producing a report with nothing to say, while the civil servants at its helm see their careers disappearing into a black hole. And then the OTIS file falls into their hands. What secrets does this hold that see a long-redundant spy being chased through Devon's green lanes in the dark?

Lots of twists and turns. Great prologue to the series. Had to re listen to some bits to ensure I got the plot right. Sean Barrett is an excellent narrator for the Slough House Series. I thought I knew who ‘Alison’ was but that was one of the surprises which I probably could have anticipated. Hope there are more in the series. I have managed to see the first 3 seasons on DVD which are surprisingly true to the books.

But the identity of the infant's mother is yet to be discovered. I wait every year for a new Cetin story. This story has many twists and turns and although the names are strange to British ears the plots are easy to follow. One of the most interesting. Cetin has a new partner after his wife had died many years ago but the weird genie-type character is still in the kitchen. Sean Barrett does a great job as usual but he also narrates the Slough House books and I have to remember he is in Jackson Lamb mode not Cetin Ikmen. . Looking forward to the next Cetin story which gives, I think, a true glimpse to life in modern Istanbul.

Story
The Great Smog. London. A dense, choking fog engulfs the city and beneath it, history is re-written…1952. Twelve years have passed since Churchill lost to the appeasers and Britain surrendered to Nazi Germany after Dunkirk. As the long German war against Russia rages on in the east, the British people find themselves under dark authoritarian rule: the press, radio and television are controlled; the streets patrolled by violent auxiliary police and British Jews face ever greater constraints.

Daniel Weyman did a marvellous job with his narration of this book with so many characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns - will they, won’t they. The imagined alternative to life in the UK in the 1940/50s with the British Government as a puppet of the German state. Very atmospheric.
I have read pretty much everything CJ Sansom has written - his Shardlake books and Winter in Madrid which opened up a conflict I knew very little about. I was saddened to hear about his recent passing as I believe he had more books ready to go.

Story
In this rich and memorable evocation of the fictional South Riding of Yorkshire are the lives, loves and sorrows of the central characters. There is Sarah Burton, fiery young headmistress; Robert Carne of Maythorpe Hall, a councillor tormented by his own disastrous marriage; Jo Astell, a socialist fighting poverty and his own illness; and Mrs Beddows, the first woman Alderman of the district (like Winifred's own mother).

I read South Riding when i was still at school but had forgotten completely the story. When I saw that it was available on Audible with it being read by Carole Boyd it was an opportunity too good to miss. The story although being set in the 1930s didn’t seem as dated as it might have been. Carole Boyd made the book really accessible using all the vocal change of characters done so brilliantly. Was sorry when it ended although I did get slightly confused with the characters starting with S. Will listen to it again definitely.

Story
A body has washed up in an irrigation canal, the artery running through Yuwonderie, a man-made paradise on the border of the Outback. Stabbed through the heart, electrocuted and dumped under cover of night, there is no doubt that detectives Ivan Lucic and Nell Buchanan are dealing with a vicious homicide. The victim is Athol Hasluck, member of one of the seven dynasties who have controlled every slice of bountiful land in this modern-day Eden for generations. Can Ivan and Nell track down a killer before the guilt at the heart of these seven families takes the entire town down with it?

Familiar characters make appearances at the end together with a surprising twist. Look forward to the next one. Hooked on Aussie Noire - Garry Disher, Jane Harper, Chris Hammer et al.

Story
When Ates Bocuk, son of a feared Istanbul gang leader, is arrested for the brutal murder of his Roma lover, feelings of vengeance are ignited among rival Turkish gangs and the Roma community. Forensic evidence is stacked against him, but Ates refuses to speak, and Inspector Suleyman suspects that there is more to the case than meets the eye. Then Cetin Ikmen discovers that Ates is psychotic and believes that everyone in his life is an imposter, which suggests that Ates might in fact be a victim of a far more sinister game.

Every year I look forward to a new Cetin Ikmen story and life in contemporary Istanbul including some magic and different religions. . Think this story has everything in it although I sometimes get confused with the Turkish names. Sean Barrett is Cetin as far as I am concerned and he is the brilliant narrator of Slow Horses books. I hope Barbara Nadel brings out a new Hakim and Arnold. Can’t understand why her books don’t have a wider readership.

Story
Bast knows how to bargain. The give-and-take of a negotiation is as familiar to him as the in-and-out of breathing; to watch him trade is to watch an artist at work. But even a master's brush can slip. When he accepts a gift, taking something for nothing, Bast's whole world is knocked askew, for he knows how to bargain - but not how to owe. From dawn to midnight over the course of a single day, follow the Kingkiller Chronicle's most charming fae as he schemes and sneaks, dancing into trouble and back out again with uncanny grace.

Another novella!
Reviewed: 15-12-23
My son suggested I use a whole credit for 4 hours which included a lot of introspection by the author saying how difficult it was to rewrite an existing story and come up with author’s notes. Most authors don’t bother with Author’s Notes! The narrator is as brilliant as ever. I know my fellow listeners and reviewers might feel that I am being unduly harsh on Mr Rothfuss but please concentrate on writing the third part of the trilogy. I am in my seventies so he better get a move on otherwise I will never hear the finale. I will save my precious credits for the last part no more novellas for me.
