I am so glad I listened to this book. The delivery was top class. But it is the story that made it. Witty conversation, original plots twisting everytime you thought you were used to it and characters who proved entertaining.

Interesting idea, but totally failing as a story with any interest. There is a limit to how much vulgarity I can take. The concept that a 'grunt' can go around a fantasy world and take everything down in seconds because he had a gun. I kept waiting for something to go wrong and there be a challenge to make it interesting, but after 3 hours of it, nope. There were some pretty sick elements which attempted to add character, but even that failed because the author glossed over the impact with a magically medicated catatonia.
Then there is the narrator, sorry but they accents given to different characters was just painful. I have only heard one worse who I only survived less than an hour.
There is a small plus, some of the one liners did manage to release a chuckle from me, but I couldn't remember any of the moments. So that tells you how significant those moments were.

One of the best I have listened to in a long time.
Thank you to the cast and crew.

Definitely gives plenty of food for thought.
I don't want to spoil it, but I always enjoy a book taking unexpected directions. Even once I got the gist of where it was going, I found myself not certain which tangent it was going to take and found it took the option I hadn't even thought of.
Thanks

On the face of it, this is a story about human v alien war and attrition. It is difficult to write much detail without giving away some huge spoilers, suffice to say, as the summary hints, there are some significant twists which caught me completely off-guard, which is something I can't remember the last book (if any) which have achieved this so completely.

Instead of risk giving anything away, I will try to focus on the depth of G Ogden's writing.
By this I am mostly referring to the characters and their interaction. At first I settled into the main characters, comfortable in the unsurprising type casts they fulfilled as members of a deep space recon crew. But as the story changed its direction, so did the characters, further justifying what was in actual fact one of the aforementioned twists. It doesn't stop there, you grow with the characters as you learn the full extend of this story.
The settings were visually described without the nth degree of detail that some sci-fi can offer, allowing a little more freedom of the imagination while not detracting from the story or purpose of the scene.

Overall I was waiting for the next opportunity I would have to listen to more and have taken away a host of new ideas,

Thank you G Ogden

What can I say the accents had my daughter and I in stitches. One of them, I can’t remember which now even sounded like Kermit.
The story did have promise and presented some interesting points.

History of the apocalypse that is. So many stories start after the beginning and when you get into them, you're left wondering how did it all begin.
Well now you know, but I won't spoil it. Just listen;)

You can't complain about Dickens or the other authors. all of the stories are classic stories of haunting.
The narration by Simon Callow has introduced me to a voice I will look for more work from. Sally Phillips gave a refreshing balance and centre of the story telling.
