Love the performance more than the story

The story is refreshing, However, I must agree with previous reviewers in that 1) such brothel seems unrealistic (at least very hard to believe that M selects women who “enjoy” this way of life); 2) details about taking guest make one uncomfortable. Otherwise I enjoyed the performance very much. The narrator is good at differentiating character voices.

As a Roman historian, I find most historical novels set against a Roman background unbearable. This series, however, is exceptional. The “modernization” of historical concepts and terms is unobtrusive. Marcus and Helena are compassionate, lovely souls, while remaining products of their time (and class, sadly). Due to the same reason I find Anton Lesser’s portrayal of Falco is much superior than, say, Christian Rodska’s.

Lydia is a real star. Her laugh is spreadable and she has a fierce, vibrant life in her. Wickham, albeit reformed/redeemed, is still a shallow character.
In turns of romance (for it is it’s genre) it is not a particularly well-written one. The “rake reformed” trope is cheesy and at times laughable. Johnny Flynn, nevertheless, portrays Wickham’s wicked charm well.
The sub-plot regarding the other “fallen woman” is a bit too predictable and the little mystery obvious—whoever has read P&P can guess how it will turn out. Still, on the whole a rather surprisingly interesting listen.

I enjoy the setting of the story, the writer’s style? and the characters. However, the ending/solving of the mystery is simply unsatisfactory. I did enjoy it as a historical novel, just not as a good mystery novel.
The narrator did well.

A very bland story with shallow, uninteresting characters. No development of character, no plot to speak of.
Narration is okay but unremarkable (the author should probably take the blame).
The title ‘Duke of Manchester’ sounds particularly jarring.

My only criticism is that intervals between two chapters are often too long (and make one wonder whether the audio has stopped automatically). Otherwise a wonderful listen.

David Suchet’s voices for the particular genre and era is perfect. I enjoyed the listen very much.

This is really a book in two parts. The first part, the actual “three nights”, is wonderfully written, sensual and heartfelt. The second part is somewhat mediocre, no strong conflicts but “tying the loose ends”. I suppose far more dramatic and conflicting scenes under the same plot structure one can read/listen to Laura Kinsale’s The Dream Hunter, but the present one is not bad, just…a bit boring in the second half.

The book is Laura Kinsale at her best: a journey with wonderfully complicated, flawed characters, a quest of faith and truth, a book with plot so unusual and exciting that you cannot put down.
I agree that as a narrator, Nicholas Boulton is in a class of his own, although the voice he adopts for Maddy gives me just a tinge of uncomfortableness.

This is one of my favorite M/M stories: exciting plot with refreshing characters, enough seriousness and tenderness with just a tinge of light-heartedness. The narration is not always perfect, especially when it comes to the pronunciation of some words, but I like the voices adopted for the main characters. Overall a very enjoyable listen.
