Strong. Concludes the Falco series
Reviewed: 05-01-25
Great reading by Rodska who captures the plebian Falco very well. A sad:dark story in some ways with a tragic beginning, and with some pretty questionable activities from the heretofore-lovable Falco and his mate Petronius. But Helena forgives Falco and she is seldom wrong! Full of the lovely historical detail that Davis does so well and with well- judged touches of humour.

Story
Ex-detective Jackson Brodie is staving off a bad case of midlife malaise when he is called to a sleepy Yorkshire town, and the seemingly tedious matter of a stolen painting. But one theft leads to another, including the disappearance of a valuable Turner from Burton Makepeace, home to Lady Milton and her family. Once a magnificent country house, Burton Makepeace has now partially been converted into a hotel, hosting Murder Mystery weekends.

Agatha Christie literary spoof
Reviewed: 05-01-25
Odd book with a plot that is somewhat Christie-inspired country house mystery and somewhat farce. A distinct sense of characters popping in and out through stage doors! Characters are well built and interesting… but occasionally act oddly, in order to perpetrate the plot. It is as other reviewers mention, very unlike other Jackson Brodie books. I find the literary allusions jarring and presented through inner voices of various characters some of it at times seems really off track. the author’s sniping at Christie is very mean spirited (is given a different name but the references are very obvious). I’d be surprised if this up-itself book attains the lasting success of Christie’s formulaic novels (where the formula was known and loved). The reading is well phrased but the some of the characters voices too jokey for my taste.

Story
Meanwhile, Gillan McArdle’s academic career is ending because of one stupid lapse of judgement. Offered a short-term contract, he lands on the Hebridean island of Harris to investigate obscure animal bones. Quickly dismissing the unicorn skull as a thinly disguised fake, he can’t deny there’s something unusual about these bones. Baited by rumors of a majestic tusked horse roaming the uplands, Gill begins to suspect someone is manipulating him. As he gradually unravels the mystery of the skull, he grasps a disturbing conclusion: If this creature does exist, the evidence suggests it’s a killer.

Really fine, lovely writing. The past reaches into the present, and sets off a set of awful crimes. Thank goodness for the thoughtful, listening detective Jimmy Perez who can sort it all out along with his young and fledgling sidekick, Sandy. Super reading - the narrator does different voices and accents so well. Highly recommended.

Story
When Shetland detective Jimmy Perez finds a body in a hut used by fishermen, it seems to be a straightforward case of suicide. He recognises the victim - a stranger with amnesia who had disrupted a local party the night before his death. Yet this is no desperate act of anguish but the work of a cold and calculating killer. As Perez investigates, he finds himself mired in the hidden secrets of the small Biddista community. Then another body is found. Perez knows he must break the cycle before another death occurs. But this is a crazy time of year, when night blurs into day and nothing is quite as it seems....

Lots of nice characters. The central female is a little too indulged by the author maybe? She makes some very daft misjudgements throughout, somewhat leading me to question how good she really was at her crime-analysis job. Very good narration, except for some mistakes with Scottish place names. Book very pacily written and both male and female characters varied and interesting. No flouncy blonde girls in this book. Thanks Val!

I struggled to continue with this one. Narration does not pick out the different characters well, and the phrasing/emphasis are also confusing. Speeding up to 1.2 helped the pace.
