this book is not biography or memoir. although drawing on real historical material in letters, this is a fictionalised account, with an invented main character. good for what it is, but only one star because it is missold.

Georgette Heyer is as always unutterably brilliant, and this story is among her best. the voice performance was reasonable, and didn't detract from the story too much. It wasn't great though, at times accents were misplaced, the servants for example should not have a cockney twang. lady ombersley's character was too commanding, in the book she is written as much more frail. some of the humour was missed by odd word emphases, but all in all a reasonable performance.

Worth listening to, Tom Watson's diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes became the springboard for a staggeringly impressive health recovery. While not agreeing with all his political views, he speaks well and passionately about the need to make progress in not allowing another generation be sold a sugar coated carb addicted life with all its consequent woes.

this novel was more like a comic book. implausible plot, caricatures of protagonists, and yet for all that very entertaining and I'll probably follow the next in series. good enough for a listen while doing the housework, I certainly wouldn't have stopped listening till I got to the end.

this was an amazing performance by the narrator. and if you don't know already that the book is a classic then you must have lived in a hole under a hill for the last few decades.
