1926, and in a country still recovering from the Great War, London has become the focus for a delirious new nightlife. In the clubs of Soho, peers of the realm rub shoulders with starlets, foreign dignitaries with gangsters and girls sell dances for a shilling a time. The notorious queen of this glittering world is Nellie Coker, ruthless but also ambitious to advance her six children, including the enigmatic eldest, Niven whose character has been forged in the crucible of the Somme. But success breeds enemies and Nellie's empire faces threats from without and within.

Difficult to love

I have enjoyed many other Kate Atkinson titles and love Jason Watkins so the two appeared to be a dream combo. I enjoyed the detective character of Frobisher and was intrigued to know the whereabouts of the missing girl but I just couldn’t bring myself to care about the Cokers, and found myself drifting off during their lengthy plot lines. I only listened to half of the book and maybe will resume but perhaps not. If you have a passion for the 1920s this could be the book for you, the historical detail is quite beautiful. The narration is wonderful. So much to recommend but overall it just couldn’t hold my interest.

Wonderful Escapism!

If you listen to audiobooks to transport you into the lives of other people and situations then this book hits the spot! An intriguing romp of a book through family relationships, infidelity, eccentric scientists and murder! I predicted some it it, in part, but that didn’t take anything away from this entertaining roller coaster ride of a book.

Wonderful

The story is completely absorbing and compelling. The narration pitch perfect , the writing rich and sumptuous. A fascinating fiction based in historical reality. I especially enjoyed the strong and wonderfully well written female characters, who all contributed to my understanding of what it meant to be a woman at that time. What an absolute treat.
