Story
Martha Gellhorn was a strong-willed, self-made, modern woman whose journalism, and life, were widely influential at the time and cleared a path for women who came after her. An ardent anti-fascist, she wrote about real people doing real things with intelligence and passion. She is most famous, to her enduring exasperation, as Ernest Hemingway's third wife. Long after their divorce, her short tenure as "Mrs. Hemingway" from 1940 to 1945 invariably eclipsed her writing and, consequently, she never received her full due.

Can’t understand the lack of interest in this wide ranging work.
Fascinating to read contemporaneous, nineteen thirties to forties, comments about the English from independent observers standpoint. Also how MG was well ahead of the times re women’s lib issues and how she kicked open doors right up to the White House. Spain, Cuba, China. It’s all there. And the narration is great. Highly recommend this as a hand book for young people and informative for mid twentieth century history buffs.

Story
Kenneth Rose was one of the most astute observers of the establishment for over 70 years. The wry and amusing journals of the royal biographer and historian made objective observation a sculpted craft. His impeccable social placement located him within the beating heart of the national elite for decades. He was capable of writing substantial history, such as his priceless material on the abdication crisis from conversations with both the Duke of Windsor and the Queen Mother.

Story
Born in Chicago in 1897, 'Chips' Channon settled in England after the Great War, married into the immensely wealthy Guinness family, and served as Conservative MP for Southend-on-Sea from 1935 until his death in 1958. His career was unremarkable. His diaries are quite the opposite. Elegant, gossipy and bitchy by turns, they are the unfettered observations of a man who went everywhere and who knew everybody.

I stuck with it and really liked it

The narration seemed a little odd at first and not very relaxing. However the content is so revealing and intimate that it is a worthy listen overall. This is an inside story of between the wars aristocracy that lifts the lid on the superficial others. Chips’ contemporaneous comments are thought provoking and better than hindsight. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the period covered. Where else will you find pen portraits of so many people of the times? Go for it!

Story
It’s January 1941, and the Blitz is devastating England. As America maintains its isolationist position, Churchill knows that Britain is doomed without its powerful ally. Harry Hopkins, President Roosevelt’s most trusted adviser, is sent to London as his emissary and comes face to face with the prime minister himself and an attractive and determined young female driver who may not be what she seems.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
YES. Wonderful realistic fast flowing politics and romance. Vivid realistic content portrayed by top notch narrator.
What other book might you compare Sleep in Peace Tonight to, and why?
To me this book stands on its own without compare. It covers much varied subject matter from most elements of early 1940s life & politics. It is several books under one cover: all of them extremely enjoyable.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
There are so many incidents in so many places that it is difficult to choose one. I just enjoyed them all.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Somewhat sad in places: especially secret work in France and descriptions of blitz.
Any additional comments?
This is a well rounded story about a particular few important years in Anglo American history where personal lives are well melded with the big scene. Cannot recommend author / narrator too highly.
