Another Good Story
Reviewed: 18-12-24
If you are into Baldacci, especially King and Maxwell then this is just what you expect. Good performance and the character development of Michelle is very good. A couple of aspects of the plot are a bit unrealistic as they were secret service agents not commandos but regardless a good listen overall.

Good but dropping off
Reviewed: 17-09-24
If you like that genre this is a worthwhile listen. With Carr you always get the extensive detail of weapons, tactics and the culture of special operations. The story does also have some nice highlights and twists which keep it interesting.
However, where this rendition drops off is that it is getting very unrealistic in places. It doesn't matter, how well trained, how much technology or numbers an opposition force has they will easily be overrun by the good guys. Reece, will somehow survive in any situation and achieve any goal and track down any adversary regardless of who or where they may be. This is getting a bit more like Rambo than Zero Dark Thirty.
The ending does buy you into the next novel but I suspect it will be more of the same. I plan to take a break from James Reece and maybe come back to it later.
The performance is top as always.

Story
On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. Now, with no family and free from the military's command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward revenge.

Most may have already seen the Amazon series, the novel has some differences but if you liked the series then you'll love the novel. The narrator did a great job too, creating characters with his voice.

Story
Being a Secret Service agent is one of the most treacherous jobs in the world and never more so than in today's highly polarized America. Facing threats from fence jumpers and manifesto writers, and from murderous terrorists and sophisticated spies, protecting the president is harder than ever. In an age of hyper-partisan politics, emotions are high and threats are everywhere. On top of that, with international tensions reaching a boiling point, it's harder than ever to determine friend from foe.

I began listening to this audiobook a few days before the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Having listened to this book it does not surprise me that events unfolded the way they did with the Secret Service going through all these challenges.

A solid spy story
Reviewed: 18-07-24
I first became aware of Chris Whitcomb through Cold Zero so I was excited when I saw this audio version of his novel 'White'.
This novel has a blend of action, espionage and political tension. An interesting plot with different character arces that come together for a twist at the end. It is also nice to see the main villan is not your stereotypical terrorist.
The performance is very good with the narrator using a variety of voices for the different characters.
I only have 2 criticisms. The first is that I expected more traditional HRT action and the second is the main character comes across a bit generic, I felt myself more emotionally attached to his wife and family than himself.
Overall Whitcomb has a talent for this genre and I wish he would have more releases.

Story
From chasing down dangerous felons on the gang unit to meticulously executing undercover operations in narcotics, Paul Milone has seen crimes and criminals from a perspective most cops never do. He infiltrated drug rings, purchased weapons from murderers, and even sold machine guns to cartel members, all while walking a tightrope between duty and danger. As an undercover cop, he looked like a criminal, played the role, and hid in plain sight as he targeted the bad guys.

Story
The Qur'an, believed by Muslims to be the word of God, was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad 1,400 years ago. It is the supreme authority in Islam and the living source of all Islamic teaching; it is a sacred text and a book of guidance that sets out the creed, rituals, ethics, and laws of the Islamic religion. It has been one of the most influential books in the history of literature. Recognized as the greatest literary masterpiece in Arabic, it has nevertheless remained difficult to understand in its English translations.

Story
SAS trooper Matt 'Lastman' Standing is a lethal killing machine with experience in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. Plus he's worked with French in the past. It's not a mission he wants, but Standing made a bad choice in his past, and it has come back to haunt him. Now he's hunting French in the lawless Wild West forests of Humboldt County, where the US produces most of its legal - and illegal - cannabis. But French isn't the only predator in the wilderness - there are Mexican cartels, Russian Mafia and Hungarian gangsters - and Standing has to overcome them all to get to his target.

Disappointed
Reviewed: 02-10-22
The overall description of this title sounds amazing. A troubled SAS soldier with anger issues sent to track down and take out a rogue ex navy seal unfortunately the reality was very disappointing.
To start with the narration is very poor, slow and monotone. I had to listen on 1.5x speed to make it sound more appealing.
The next disaster is that 60-70% of this book is completely unnecessary, long drawn out dialogue about growing weed and what makes good weed and bad weed and how to trim weed, it is endless, exhausting and adds nothing to character or plot development.
The main character could have had many more layers but they weren't explored, the main antagonist also could have been developed further.
To be fair there are a couple of nice twists but this is overall a highly forgettable story.
A lot of potential but poor execution.
