Story
I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the university at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep. My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me.

Mixed feelings about it more nay than yay

As per headline, I liked the narrative and story setting.
I am not a writer, I could not write anything better and my english is barely sufficient to write an email but to me this all sounded too macho, a bit like a Hollywood fantasy-action movie.
The book seems to be about a contemporary american kid that works in a circus, hitting the endless american highways with the crew, roaming a countryside populated by stupids and/or brats and plays guitar to pay for the college in a Los Angeles' club; in all this, the reader puts up a thick american accent most of the time, to help characterizations.
It is the usual american dream of a self made individual.
P.S. True names-based magic might be taken from Earthsea saga by Ursula LeGuin (i think).

Story
Hans Castorp is, on the face of it, an ordinary man in his early 20s, on course to start a career in ship engineering in his home town of Hamburg, when he decides to travel to the Berghof Santatorium in Davos. The year is 1912 and an oblivious world is on the brink of war. Castorp’s friend Joachim Ziemssen is taking the cure and a three-week visit seems a perfect break before work begins. But when Castorp arrives he is surprised to find an established community of patients, and little by little, he gets drawn into the closeted life and the individual personalities of the residents.

It has been a beautiful experience.
A bit slow or difficult at times but so are some of the best things in life.
Hope many others, like I did, will enjoy this masterpiece.

Intriguing read

The part about differences between mental illnesses classification systems was an eye-opener but it is, in general, a truly fascinating subject.
I appreciated the narrator and the other readers.
As non-professional I would recommend
