Philosophising
Reviewed: 19-12-24
It"s seems to be more philosophising on the effects of the drug trade rather than telling a story. The action story peaters out with the psychopath winning, which left me disappointed but I guess it"s more about the journey than the outcome. It"s good but different.

Story
In the tradition of Frank McCourt’s Angela’s Ashes and Alice Taylor’s To School Through the Fields, Tom Phelan’s We Were Rich and We Didn"t Know It is a heartfelt and masterfully written memoir of growing up in Ireland in the 1940s. We Were Rich and We Didn"t Know It recounts Tom’s upbringing in an isolated, rural community from the day he was delivered by the local midwife. With tears and laughter, it speaks to the strength of the human spirit in the face of life"s adversities.

Insight into life in rural Ireland beautifully written

I have greatly enjoyed the two previous books by Tom Phelan I have listened to. This, of course, didn"t have the plot of the others, but it shared his amazing skill of creating the pictures and emotions from the fine detail and beautiful use of words.

Same main male lead for the four books with variety other good characters for each book. Each book manages to be different, so I listened to the four books in a row without it ever feeling repetitive. Each story twists and turns with great momentum. I greatly enjoyed all four books.

Story
First published in 1988 and described by Ali Smith as "one of Muriel Spark"s most liberating, and meditative novels" - A Far Cry from Kensington shows Muriel Spark at the mature height of her powers. The narrator is one Mrs. Hawkins. She writes from Italy, a far cry from Kensington indeed, taking us back to her threadbare years in postwar London. As a young, rather fat war-widow she spent her days working for a crazy, almost bankrupt publisher; and her nights offering advice from her boarding-house in South Kensington.

Good time travel story with some irritations
Reviewed: 06-03-24
I enjoyed the story. Anything about time travel is great mind stretcher. Once it got going it was hard to put down. Packed with clichés and a lead with a continual winge about responsibility grated a bit but not enough to stop the enjoyment. Readers style of strongly emphasising words in every sentence a bit irritating- melodramatic or building excitement will depend on the ear of the beholder.

Short stories tend to leave me wanting more, wishing it was a novel, but they are also a clever idea, a thought experiment not fluffed up with padding. I was often left uncomfortable but never board, always wanting more.

Part human comedy and part mystery, Lies the Mushroom Pickers Told is an enthralling, masterful story about what holds a village together and what keeps people apart. When journalist Patrick Bracken returns to Gohen, the Irish village where he was born, he knows the eyes of the townspeople are on him. He has come home to investigate two deaths that happened decades earlier when he was a child, deaths that were ruled accidental.

Gentle, beautifully described story of happenings in an Irish village.

I loved it. A round about sort of whodunnit but the magic is in the description of ordinary happenings in the lives of people in a small Irish village. The gentle storytelling with intricate observation of small events and people’s thoughts and emotions with a beautiful dash of humour made it great pleasure to listen to.
