This is a great story in the hard booked detective genre. The characters are fully rounded, and as ever (with Stepehen King), the plot is sublime.

Story
On a lonely moor in the northeast of England, the body of a young woman is discovered near the site of a vanished church. In the south, a girl lies buried beneath a Saxon mound. To the southeast, the ruins of a priory hide a human skull. Each is a sacrifice, a summons. And something in the darkness has heard the call. But another is coming: Parker the hunter, the avenger.

Another magnificent book by John Connolly. This is one of the best Charlie Parker stories. As someone from the area, I have to say the Geordie accents are laughable, but as ever, Jeff Harding is terrific.

It is spring, and the mummified body of a young Jewish woman is discovered buried in the Maine woods. It is clear that she gave birth shortly before her death. But there is no sign of a baby. Private detective Charlie Parker is engaged by the lawyer Moxie Castin to shadow the police investigation and find the infant, but Parker is not the only searcher. Someone else is following the trail left by the woman, someone with an interest in more than a missing child, someone prepared to leave bodies in his wake.

Story
The Great Smog. London. A dense, choking fog engulfs the city and beneath it, history is re-written…1952. Twelve years have passed since Churchill lost to the appeasers and Britain surrendered to Nazi Germany after Dunkirk. As the long German war against Russia rages on in the east, the British people find themselves under dark authoritarian rule: the press, radio and television are controlled; the streets patrolled by violent auxiliary police and British Jews face ever greater constraints.

Superbly written. This book has been thoroughly researched (historically) and is a very good 'slow burning' story. I really like the accurate depictions created. The performance by the reader is fantastic.

Another great story in the Charlie Parker series. Unfortunately it's slightly spoilt by the fact that they changed narrator - whilst he's decent, Jeff Harding had really established the voice of the characters and this guy falls short.
