Story
1901. On board the Ormen, a whaling ship battling through the unforgiving North Sea, Nicky Duthie awakes. Attacked and dragged there against her will, it’s just her and the crew – and they’re all owed something only she can give them. 1973. Decades later, when the ship is found still drifting across the ocean, it’s deserted. Just one body is left on board, his face and feet mutilated, his cabin locked from the inside. Everyone else has vanished.

Very entertaining
Reviewed: 07-09-24
Without leaving spoilers, this book keeps readers on their proverbial toes throughout. Whilst the story from 1901 is a pretty unpleasant one, none the less it is balanced by the story set in the current day. Why do the three strangers suddenly turn up? What is it they are not telling Dom? Who is the woman on the beach? Read and be thoroughly entertained.

Great story

I can recommend this book as one I thoroughly enjoyed. brilliantly read by Dominic West, good story and good characters. Maybe the representation of the police was somewhat stereotypical, but I liked Clem Vallens (spelling?) and therefore cared what happened to him. Whilst the supernatural element may have been a little far-fetched, that is to be expected in a story including horror/paranormal, but it was included in a story that felt very real.

Fourteen-year-old Tory Brennan is as fascinated by bones and dead bodies as her famous aunt, acclaimed forensic anthropologist, Tempe Brennan. However living on a secluded island off Charleston in South Carolina there is not much opportunity to put her knowledge to the test. Until her and her ragbag group of technophile friends stumble across a shallow grave containing the remains of a girl who has been missing for over thirty years.

Grew on me!
Reviewed: 25-06-24
As a long time fan of Kathy Reichs I was at first confused that this story seemed to be teen fiction, and did not include Tempe Brennan. At first I really disliked the characters, and even the way it was being performed but I persisted and soon became engaged with the plot . By the end, even though I had guessed some of the twists I found myself really liking the book. I suspect Kathy Reichs will be writing more books with Virals as the central characters.

Story
When Annie marries widower Edward Stonehouse and arrives at Guardbridge, his estate on the Yorkshire moors, she thinks she has finally put darkness behind her. She is mistaken. Edward's sister, Iris, still lives in the family home. A taxidermist and medium, she urges Annie to watch out for black feathers - claiming that they mark the spot where a spirt has visited. At first, Annie dismisses her warnings. But, before long, she begins to feel haunted.

In the midst of the woods stands a house called Lichen Hall. This place is shrouded in folklore—old stories of ghosts, of witches, of a child who is not quite a child. Now the woods are creeping closer, and something has been unleashed. Pearl Gorham arrives in 1965, one of a string of young women sent to Lichen Hall to give birth. And she soon suspects the proprietors are hiding something. Then she meets the mysterious mother and young boy who live in the grounds—and together they begin to unpick the secrets of this place.

Great and Unusual story
Reviewed: 03-06-24
My overall review in short would be that this is a great story, unusual and dealing with some painful subjects in a way that brings home the emotional trauma that must have affected unmarried pregnant woman in the 1950s and 1960s. The only reason I have not given it full marks across the board is that it did seem repetitive at some times and that made it feel overlong. We could have done with a few less chapters and the book would still have been great. I did like the characterisations but had guessed the big reveal well before the end which probably explains why I would have been just as happy with a shorter novel. All in all, a good book and one I would recommend.

I have always been a fan of Kathy Reichs novel but had in the past read the books. This was my first time with an Audible book and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance. I listened to the whole book whilst driving to and from a work meeting. It was gripping. The explanation of the plot may have dragged a bit but I would still give this book a 100% recommendation

Story
A mysterious depiction of masked revellers at the Venice carnival hangs in the college rooms of Oliver's old professor in Cambridge. On this cold winter's night, its eerie secret is revealed by the ageing don. The dark art of the Venetian scene, instead of imitating life, has the power to entrap it. To stare into the painting is to play dangerously with the unseen demons it hides, and become the victim of its macabre beauty....

SPOILERS
Whilst I did enjoy this book, and there were obvious points of difference in that this involved a painting, nonetheless the vengeful spurned lover and the series of events (I don't want to spoil it too much for others), paid more than lip service to Susan Hill's other more famous story. I found it a little predictable as a result. Also the recording must have been edited in a hurry as for the first time with an Audible book, there were repeated sections on at least two occasions that should have been edited out . Good but no cigar!

I am a great fan of Darcy Coates which is why I opted to read this book. I am really disappointed. It is far too long and repetitive and completely predictable, drawing on a plot which has been used many times before in other novels. Perhaps some may not guess the end (no spoilers) but even if you don't, you will still wish she had sent it to someone to edit. If you like Darcy Coates, don't bother with this one.

I did not give a 5 as I did find the main characters somewhat irritating and even unlikeable, which is a problem for me when immersing myself in a story. However, there were some good moments and some good plot twists. I am not sure I would recommend it heartily, but it's definitely worth a listen
