Story
Christianity is the most enduring and influential legacy of the ancient world, and its emergence the single most transformative development in Western history. Even the increasing number in the West today who have abandoned the faith of their forebears, and dismiss all religion as pointless superstition, remain recognisably its heirs. Seen close up, the division between a sceptic and a believer may seem unbridgeable. Widen the focus, though, and Christianity's enduring impact upon the West can be seen in the emergence of much that has traditionally been cast as its nemesis.

Excellent book, ham actor narrating
Reviewed: 12-07-24
This book is fantastic but marred by the mistaken idea that actors are better narrators than authors. This actor gives particularly ham performances that often sound as if he is about to weep with either joy or sorrow - both equally annoying. The sections of the book narrated by Holland himself are so much better. Luckily the argument and evidence are so compelling that it just about survives the over acting

Beautiful prose matched by the voice
Reviewed: 22-12-20
Robert Hardy could read a google terms and conditions contract and make the prose sing. I'd recommend anything at all that ge read but this is a masterpiece. I was gripped from start to finish. Incredible book made even better by this wonderful performance.

Story
The year is 1806. Centuries have passed since practical magicians faded into the nation’s past. But scholars of this glorious history discover that one remains: the reclusive Mr Norrell, whose displays of magic send a thrill through the country. Proceeding to London, he raises a beautiful woman from the dead and summons an army of ghostly ships to terrify the French. Yet the cautious, fussy Norrell is challenged by the emergence of another magician: the brilliant novice Jonathan Strange. Young, handsome and daring, Strange is the very antithesis of Norrell.

Brilliant but usual Audible chapter problem
Reviewed: 29-11-20
One of the best books ever written and a superb performance marred only by the usual audible problems - no chapter headings and a random division into 26 that corresponds with nothing. Why doesn't Bezos use his lockdown squillions to fix this lousy interface?

I wanted a biography of the composer. most of this recording is highlights from music, not what I wanted but quite well done if that's what you're after.
