Another excellent book
Reviewed: 22-04-21
I was lucky enough to receive a review code for this book. Dean Henegar has delivered again with the excellent Jack Voraces bringing his characters to life. The world building continues from the solid base provided by the first series, with another challenging medical case that requires immersion in this virtual world. The setting as a sea captain is quite different from the previous series, and the main character is somewhat darker.

Fun and satisfying

I recieved a review copy of this book. It is well narrated and a lot of fun. It starts with the main character already having a long history in the game world, restarting his character to try and find a way out. His adventure takes him in odd directions at times and the challenge is derived from what he is attempting to do rather than from the game itself. The actual action is therefore much less than you might expect, with a greater focus on overcoming challenges to achieve the ultimate goal.

Action packed fun with an interesting world

The main character goes through significant and satisfying character development in this book. Whilst he starts annoyingly naive and short sighted, events force him to adapt to the reality before him. The world is interesting and his approach to the game is unique, often winning by exploiting the presented mechanics, rather than being overpowered. The rich history of the world outside is also intriguingly hinted at.
The narration is excellent and I look forward to further books in the series and seeing how the main character develops further.

A well written and narrated continuation of the story which sees Slater fighting to stay one step ahead. The world continues to be fascinating with new races and technology to fight against. The ending feels a little sudden but opens up more possibilities for where the next book will go.

I recieved a review copy of this excellent book. It is well written and narrated, placing you in the shoes of a young technician trying to maintain the aging systems of the bunker. The book really captures her struggle and the world view that comes from growing up in such an environment, whilst also maintains a mystery that is slowly uncovered as the book progresses.

Story
An evil wizard has a midlife crisis. Is trying to sacrifice your estranged wife to a bloodthirsty demon an irredeemable act of evil? This is the sort of question the Dread Wizard Darruk Darkbringer struggles with. After being called evil one too many times, Darruk sets off to find a new purpose in his life and become a beloved celebrity. Can a dark wizard come to terms with himself and prove to the world that a few atrocities don’t define who he is? You’ll feel guilty for laughing at his twisted tale of self-discovery.

A fun listen
Reviewed: 13-09-20
I recieved a review copy of this book. I'd been listening to a lot of heavy books recently and was looking for something a little more light-hearted, the title of this one stood out and I was not disappointed.
The story was clever but didn't take itself too seriously. The plot and characters are silly but I was still interested in them and where the story would go. The narrator was also a good choice for the book. My only criticism is that it ended a little abruptly.

Story
Bilda FOH Smartown has the biggest civilization in Avila. He brings in billions in ad revenue. Everything is branded. For instance, you can partake of a foamy ale in the Troll and Tourniquet pub - sponsored by Texatron Auto-air, the cheapest deals on the best air cars - or pull the lever at the High Summer Hangings - courtesy of Blue Bird Neon. Perhaps you’d like to sponsor a battle and ride with the fiercest centaurs, or hire a bard and seduce a princess. Everything and anything has a price tag in Bilda’s empire. Revenue is king, and coincidently, so is Bilda.

I recieved a review copy of this book. The story is solid and well narrated. It has a light-hearted comedic theme balanced with a harsher storyline which does work. Unlike many such books it has me as interested in the interplay of the characters outside the came as in.
As a late comer to the game the main character doesn't have much to explore and this causes the story to suffer a bit as he's taking over pre built settlements as much as building up his own so there is a lack of a feeling of progression that you would find in similar titles. The turn based combat also isn't really exploited for anything other than comedic value until later in the game.

Story
With powerful forces working behind the scenes, Daisy seemed to be on the path to what may very well be a rousing victory. Or a glorious death, should she fail. For obvious reasons, she hoped for the former rather than the latter. She and her friends had persevered and come out on the other side time and again. Now they just had to pull together one last time to stand against their greatest foe. Success would mean victory. Failure would mean the loss of all they held dear.
