AUDIBLE HAS THE ORDER WRONG. Plus lots of repetition
Reviewed: 30-12-24
BE AWARE you will get to hear spoilers because Audible has positioned the result of a trial in the wrong place.
Maybe it's me getting bored by the format, but I felt that the standard of these books is not up to the first 3. The story lines seem flat in comparison and they're not as well written, There is a lot of repetition and I kept hearing sentences, phrases and even paragraphs that I had heard before in the previous books. There are quiet a few mistakes that should have been picked up by the editor too. These books are altogether quite a disappointment.

This is a really good story, well written with interesting twists and turns and excellent characterisation. Huge problem however is that Abby Craden makes DeVor sound like an 80 year old letch. Such a shame. Don't listen to this one, read it if you can

Story
Blake Taylor isn't the queen of horror, but she's certainly a member of the royal court. Blake has made a career out of writing novels that make her readers want to leave the lights on at night. What Blake's fans and very few people realize is that Blake Taylor is scared of her own shadow and just about everything else. After a family intervention, a case of writer's block, and the desire to be free of the confines of fear, she leaves New York and rents a house in Cypress Glade, Louisiana.

Another great one from Robin Alexander

I love this woman's warm and humerous writing and I listen to her books with a smile on my lips, while a chuckle is nearby. RA's lightness of touch and the worlds she creates, where good people come out on top and kindness prevails, soothes my soul which is deeply troubled by today's world. Her books are like having a rest, a little holiday from harsh reality.
Lori Prince, who seems to narrated most of RA's books, does a reasonable job but sadly her narration is lacking here. She is pleasant to listen to and does a great job at conveying humour but it's a real shame she doesn't do a better, and wider, range of Southern accents. To my British ears what she does do sounds very stereotyped. All, or at least most, of RA's books are set in the Southern US and appropriate accents would enhance the storylines by conveying more of the Southern atmosphere along with the feisty, quirky nature of many of the characters. Mostly I Iove LP's work but unfortunately I don't think she's the narrator to bring the best out of RA's books.

Great characters and good plots. Although some cases are gruesome it's all a bit too nicey, nicey, cozy crime for me; I would prefer a bit more realism and grit. It also lacks any form of a puzzle for the listener to unpick, or the excitement to keep on listening even when one should really be asleep.

Story
Flood waters aren't the only dangerous current in the Rockies—Riley Robinson's attraction to the just-passing-through Ana Potrero is immediate and mutual. Some wine, some laughs, some passion—and no strings. Perfect, right? When Ana proves to be far more complicated, amusing, and appealing than one night could ever fully explore, Riley can't believe she let Ana slip through her fingers. A second chance brings all the intense pleasures of their first encounter, but the realities of dating, distance, ex-lovers, and family could turn sweet, sweet wine into bitter dregs.

Not sure if it is Jamie Clevenger's writing which focuses a lot on doubt and mistrust but think it is more likely Abby Craden's delivery, which does not bring the story to life, that made this audiobook drag.

Great f/f sports novel spoiled by use of too much jargon
Reviewed: 17-11-24
I love f/f sports novels and this is a good story. it is well written, the characters are great and it has tenderness as well as heat. Unfortunately the volleyball jargon used by the author is not explained in the story, So, if you do not understand volleyball - like me - there are significant sections of the audiobook that are like listening to a foreign language.
I can understand Nicole Pyland not wanting to make her novel sound like a volleyball dictionary or rule book but I do think she could have used her obvious intelligence and knowledge to hint the meaning of words and phrases or describe the play rather than using terms that are completely unknown to people who are not volleyball fans. It is such a shame she did not think to do that because this is a real downer when her novel is excellent otherwise.
In addition the narratkiion is somewhat problematic because the narrator, who does a good job otherwise, does not differentiate between the voices of the main characters which makes conversations between them become quite confusing at times.

Ancelet Bay, Louisiana, on the surface is a peaceful and quiet little town. The respite, however, comes with some unexpected side effects, one of which is a plastic flamingo-wielding neighbor who suspects Rusty is a terrorist.

I love Robin Alexander's quirky imagination, humour and writing style. Although Lori Prince does a great job narrating this title it is a real shame that the producer did not use someone who can do Southern accents, especially as the story and characters are situated in the South of the US and a particular point is made of Kirsten's Cajun accent.

The universe is definitely trying to punish Jennifer Andrews. Her new colleague, Ellaine Baxter, is not only an annoying, ambitious hard-ass, she's the woman who broke Jennifer's best friend's heart. Now, for added torture, they have to drive to a teambuilding conference together. On their three-hour journey, things go from tense to catastrophic after an unscheduled stop in New Zealand's wildly beautiful Kaimanawa Forest.
