Story
Tom Watson began to put on weight in his early 20s, having developed an appetite for fast food and cheap beer while studying at the University of Hull. As time progressed - and his penchant for anything sweet, fatty or fizzy persisted - he found himself adjusting his belt, loosening his collar and upsizing his wardrobe to XXL. He continued to pile on the pounds when he entered the world of politics as MP for West Bromwich East (despite short-lived flirtations with fad diets and fitness classes). By December 2014, his bathroom scales had tipped to 22 stone.

Tom's dedication to researching the whole aspect of diet and other elements of how to improve not only your physical but mental health is very impressive. Listening to his story has given me a great deal of "food for thought" on many subjects and I was particularly impressed by his determination to address the whole shameful saga surrounding sugar. This substance has caused so much grief to humankind from it's implication in the slave trade to the current disastrous effect it is having on the health of some western civilisations. It will be an uphill battle to overcome the power of sugar but it is a battle worth fighting and one we have to win. I'm on your side Tom.

Gripping and moving

One of the best thrillers I have ever listened to or read. Not only an original plot but also written with great style and at times very moving. There was even a moment of sympathy for the devious, evil villaness as she describes the loss of her own child.
Loved the clever way the Russian spy took on so many guises. Was he or wasn't he a spy ? Won't reveal the final twist but it took me by surprise.
Nicola Walker was the perfect choice to be Sarah and I hope I can find more readings by her. Not totally surprised that Richard Armitage has produced such a fine piece of work as he has always struck me as a thoughtful, sensitive and intelligent person judging from the many interviews I have witnessed or read. Hope he may find it in him to write more novels.

Story
Can you recognise the cheerful chirrups of the house sparrow? A song thrush singing out at winter's darkest hour? Or the beautiful, haunting call of the curlew? At a time of great anxiety and uncertainty, while coping with the untimely death of his mother, Charlie Corbett realised his perspective on life was slipping. In a moment of despair, he found himself - somewhat damp - lying on the side of a lonely hill staring up at a leaden sky, a melancholy drizzle seeping into his bones.

As a lifelong lover of watching and appreciating birds, listening to this book brought back many memories of my own experiences. It crystallises many ideas that are becoming increasingly recognised around the value of appreciating the beauty of the world around us in improving the quality of human life. Over the past few years I have spent a lot of time at home and watching and listening to birds in my own back garden has kept me sane. Stop, look and listen wherever you are and you will be amazed what you will find. My apologies to the author but I think I would have preferred a different narrator with a slightly softer voice.

Story
William Wordsworth (1770 -1850) is one of the most popular and enduring of the English poets. His poetry is beloved for its deep feeling, its use of ordinary speech, and its celebration of nature and of the beauty and poetry in the commonplace. Together with his friend, the poet and political activist Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Wordsworth helped launch the romantic age in English literature. These poems demonstrate the astonishing range and beauty of Wordsworth’s work and his sustained, coherent vision.

can't quite put my finger on why I couldn't give this a five star rating because I definitely couldn't put it down. Maybe it's just that it felt a bit too contrived at times with the usual crazy killers, connections with satanism and the bad cop scenario. Slightly annoyed that it wasn't resolved at the end but yes I will be listening to the sequel. Full of interesting characters however and the odd red herring so all in all worth listening to. Loved the narrator's voice !

The Art of Rest draws on groundbreaking research Claudia Hammond collaborated on - 'The Rest Test' - the largest global survey into rest ever undertaken, which was completed by 18,000 people across 135 different countries. Much of value has been written about sleep, but rest is different; it is how we unwind, calm our minds and recharge our bodies. And, as the survey revealed, how much rest you get is directly linked to your sense of well-being.

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book and found information gleaned very helpful. Will probably dip into it from time to time as there was quite a lot to absorb. Think it has helped me to identify the activities I find most restful and was quite surprised that for me it is when I am more physically active, who would have thought it !

beautiful but sad
Reviewed: 28-11-21
As a lifelong lover of the natural world, I almost dread the prospect of reading yet another tale of doom and gloom regarding man's desecration of our beautiful planet. The description of this orchard is so touching but the fact that it seems to be an oasis in an ever encroaching green desert breaks my heart. I think there are some hopeful signs that some if us have woken up to this sad fact and are trying to make changes, but is it too little too late. Only time will tell.

Didn't think Georgette Heyer would be my cup of tea but sometimes you need something light and frivolous. Mind you her characters are well drawn and the situations and dialogue are engaging. The excellent narration by Mr Armitage helps of course. Will be interesting to see if I enjoy her work as much narrated by someone else but will definitely give it a go.

Love Barack Obama's style of writing and I feel he gave an honest picture of the trials and tribulations of being an American president. I share his political point of view so maybe am inclined to look favourably on what he has to say. For political balance maybe I should read the views of a Republic ex-president as long as it's NOT Donald Trump! Don't think I could stomach that !!!!!!!!!
