About this listen

Bloomsbury presents The Templars written and read by Dan Jones.

Dan Jones narrates in his inimitably vivid and authoritative fashion the remarkable story of the Knights Templar.

'Exhilarating, epic, sword-swinging history' TLS

'Jones is certainly an entertainer, but also a fine historian who knows how to render serious scholarship into accessible prose' The Times

'Another triumphant tale from a historian who writes as addictively as any page-turning novelist' Observer

‘When it comes to rip-roaring medieval narratives, Jones has few peers, and in the Templars he finds the perfect subject' Sunday Times

The Knights Templar were the wealthiest, most powerful – and most secretive – of the military orders that flourished in the crusading era.

Their story – encompassing as it does the greatest international conflict of the Middle Ages, a network of international finance, a swift rise in wealth and influence followed by a bloody and humiliating fall – has left a comet's tail of mystery that continues to fascinate and inspire historians, novelists and conspiracy theorists.

Really liked this book. The narrator did a great job and it helped me put into context the various Crusaders movies I've seem over time.

Informative and Entertaining.

Well read and informed. Amazing how much from this I have leaned and have now to do further reading/listening. So much information to keep me going for a while. Absolutely love this book. A ride of emotions and on edge.

Comprehensive and Immersive

I loved the history, the recreated timeline and the stories that helped to immerse the reader in each character or battle. While this was an epic recreation it was also a well-crafted vehicle of learning and insight. Further, the author was a fantastic reader. To any reader interested in the holy wars, crusades or Templar organization, this is a must own.

really solid book

This is a very good book. It does require a bit of general knowledge on the Crusades to get the most out of it (I had to keep referencing other material for context). Like Jones' other books this is not boring history but instead told in a very engaging way. And the story about how the order went from integral to the crusader kingdoms success to persecuted for 'irreligious' actions by those same kingdoms says a lot about human nature...

A balanced and 'readable' telling of the Order

Dan Jones does a good job incorporating numerous sources and providing a balanced telling of the Order's history. The book unfolds very much like a consistent story with twists and turns while also sidetracking to provide relevant details to people and places. I really enjoyed this one!

Fantastic program

This book was very well researched and written from an unbiased point of view with no hidden agenda. The author has obviously done a huge amount of research and put it together very well. I have read many different works on the Templars and found this one to be the most exhaustive.
The audible was well read and fun to listen to. I recommend it to anyone with an interest in this subject. I have the hard cover book as well but listening to it was fantastic.

great

Really enjoyed the actual historical accuracy of this book. Most books about the Templars tend to involve much speculation and romanticism, this was a nice change and quite informative.
