About this listen
On a snowy winter evening in 1982, 21-year-old Mary Brown accepted a ride from a handsome stranger in the resort town of Breckenridge, Colorado. The trip ended with her brutally beaten and raped. Mary survived, but her predator's violence had only just begun.
After 10 years in prison, Tom Luther was released a far more vicious criminal. Soon, from the Rockies to West Virginia, like Ted Bundy, Luther enticed a chain of women into his murderous trap. In this gripping new edition of a true crime masterpiece, acclaimed author Steve Jackson recounts the intriguing pursuit and long awaited conviction of a charismatic, monstrous psychopath - one who remains a suspect in three other crimes, and has never given up hope of escape.

The tragic story of Susan Powell and her murdered boys, Charlie and Braden, is the only case that rivals the Jon Benet Ramsey saga in the annals of true crime. When the pretty, blonde Utah mother went missing in December of 2009 the media was swept up in the story - with lenses and microphones trained on Susan's husband, Josh. He said he had no idea what happened to his young wife, and that he and the boys had been camping in the middle of a snowstorm.

Incredible book, I couldn't stop listening!
I thought this story would get a little long winded or jump from person to person when I saw it was 19hrs long. Instead, this story is accurate, to the facts, smart and and easy listen. I was sucked in and couldn't stop listening, it's a wild story about the serial killer Thomas Luther and his many victims. Absolutely brilliant writing! can't say enough good about this, I'd recommend it to anyone.

Who knew?
I have been watching Dateline since day one (29 years and ongoing!) and continue watching, reading and listening to true crime stories all the time. I had never heard of Tom Luther! This was a fascinating story of a particularly sadistic serial killer who behaved in ways that beg comparison to Ted Bundy. Seemingly kind and charismatic, Luther turned into a monster when confronted with petite brunettes who reminded him of his abusive mother. There's a lot to unpack in this long book, and the author does a thorough job. So thorough, in fact, that it does become a bit repetitive in places. Particularly when recounting his girlfriend, Debra Snider's, history and interviews. I tried very much to empathize with this woman who knew everything he did and kept standing by her man time and time again. Ugh. No luck. The book can be graphic in places, therefore triggering to some, however, I appreciated that the author pulled no punches the way many do when discussing violent sexual attacks. There was no innuendo about "sexual assault" or "abuse". All the details were clearly explained in brutally clear and honest language. Maybe it's not easy to read or listen to, but that's exactly how it should be to make sure the reader understands the true horror of what these poor women went through. The narrator is great. For such a thoroughly researched piece of work, told in an interesting way, this book deserves 5 stars for sure.

Disturbing story of a serial killer
The author carefully describes the events and the characters involved in these true crime events. The complexity of emotions that make up the human condition, that can cause one woman to love a man such as Tomas Luther, who himself loved a woman enough to not kill her, even though she chose truth over love. The family's and the victims who were forever changed by what Luther did and how they found a way forward to some kind of healing. And the detective who was driven to leave no stone unturned for a young women who he never got to meet alive. This is a story that will stay with me for a while

at first I put on just to have something on in the car, as casual listen. this book is not that. it is a deep dive into all aspects of the evil of one man and hopes of others. hopes of a future, hopes of finding love ones, hopes of conviction and so much more. EVIL EXSISTS .
