About this listen
The Mongol army led by Genghis Khan subjugated more lands and people in 25 years than the Romans did in 400. In nearly every country the Mongols conquered, they brought an unprecedented rise in cultural communication, expanded trade, and a blossoming of civilization.
Vastly more progressive than his European or Asian counterparts, Genghis Khan abolished torture, granted universal religious freedom, and smashed feudal systems of aristocratic privilege. From the story of his rise through the tribal culture to the explosion of civilization that the Mongol Empire unleashed, this brilliant work of revisionist history is nothing less than the epic story of how the modern world was made.

Story
Napoleon Bonaparte lived one of the most extraordinary of all human lives. In the space of just 20 years, from October 1795, when as a young artillery captain he cleared the streets of Paris of insurrectionists, to his final defeat at the (horribly mismanaged) battle of Waterloo in June 1815, Napoleon transformed France and Europe. After seizing power in a coup d'état, he ended the corruption and incompetence into which the revolution had descended.

The 1929 collection of short and exquisitely written biographical essays on the lives of such famed adventurers as Alexander the Great, Casanova, Christopher Columbus, Napoleon, and Isadora Duncan. The author, William Bolitho, celebrates the contradictions and bipolar tensions that live inside and often drive even history's most celebrated heroes. Although all the greats featured in the book lived ages ago, the principles by which they lived their lives hold valuable lessons for those of us in contemporary times.

This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. This narrative history employs the methods of "history from beneath" - literature, epic traditions, private letters, and accounts - to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled.

Story
It was to be the war to end all wars, and it began at 11:15 on the morning of June 28, 1914, in an outpost of the Austro-Hungarian Empire called Sarajevo. It would officially end nearly five years later. Unofficially, however, it has never ended: Many of the horrors we live with today are rooted in the First World War. The Great War left millions of civilians and soldiers maimed or dead. It also saw the creation of new technologies of destruction: tanks, planes, and submarines; machine guns and field artillery; poison gas and chemical warfare.

In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Contained here is Julius Caesar's own account of his military adventures in Gaul at the head of the Roman army, uniquely presented in Caesar's first-person perspective (rather than as a third-person narrative as in the original Latin). Included are seven sections ("books") of the Gallic War, each encompassing one year of Caesar's battles and intrigues; though there is an eighth book, it is generally accepted to have been written by another general, shortly after Caesar's death in 44 BCE.

Story
The Roman Republic was one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of civilization. After its founding in 509 BCE, the Romans refused to allow a single leader to seize control of the state and grab absolute power. The Roman commitment to cooperative government and peaceful transfers of power was unmatched in the history of the ancient world. But by the year 133 BCE, the republican system was unable to cope with the vast empire Rome now ruled.

In the late 19th century, demand for fur was in sharp decline. This could have spelled economic disaster for the venerable Hudson's Bay Company. But an idea emerged in political and business circles in Ottawa and Montreal to connect the disparate British colonies into a single entity that would stretch from the Atlantic to the Pacific. With over 3,000 kilometers of track, much of it driven through wildly inhospitable terrain, the CPR would be the longest railroad in the world and the most difficult to build. Its construction was the defining event of its era.

it's an interesting ride through time
I honestly know very little about Genghis Kan so I was hoping to learn more about him and his deeds. Didn't realize that probably a third of the book is actually dedicated to him and the rest is more about his successors and the Mongol Empire in general. That's the disappointing part. The good thing is that there's so much more about it than I anticipated. It's a very curious read where I learned so much more and connected a lot of missing dots as to why and how certain parts of Asia are connected. It's also amazing how many vastly different cultures co-existed around that time period. The author did an excellent job as well.

Quite a Journey
#Audible1
I have always had an interest in learning more about the life of Genghis Khan and this book really delivered. It takes you on a long journey, from the beginning of Genghis Khan’s empire to how it has influenced our world in more modern times. An important story to know for all of us who want to learn about history, military tactics and what happens when success and wealth are acquired so fast that nobody knows exactly how to handle it.

Fasinating insight into a historical character
This book provided us surprisingly rich and insightful account of the life of Genghis Khan and the impact he made on the world of his time. I particularly found the accounts of his early days fascinating and the strategies he used to conquer the Central Asian area to be ruthlessly efficient.

Great History!
This is my first time of really delving into the history of the Mongolian Empire, and learning more about it's famous Khans, particularly, Temujin, a.k.a Genghis Khan. The writer tried his best to be objective, bringing out the vices and the virtues, and giving honour to whom honour is due. l also realized that Western Europe also has much to credit the Mongols for, e.g. curtailing the Muslim from overrunning Europe which would have undone the achievements of Charlemagne.
The narrator's voice, his pitch, and cadence were awesome; l couldn't wait to move to the next chapter. l love it and thoroughly enjoyed the audio book over the Christmas holidays.
