A terrible accident takes Edgar Freemantle"s right arm and scrambles his memory and his mind, leaving him with little but rage as he begins the ordeal of rehabilitation. Edgar leaves for Duma Key, an eerily undeveloped splinter of the Florida coast. The sun setting into the Gulf of Mexico calls out to him, and Edgar draws. Once he meets Elizabeth Eastlake, a sick old woman with roots tangled deep in Duma Key, Edgar begins to paint, sometimes feverishly; many of his paintings have a power that cannot be controlled. When Elizabeth"s past unfolds and the ghosts of her childhood begin to appear, the damage of which they are capable is truly devastating.

A truly amazing read/listen
What an amazing story and performance. Truly enthralling. Brava to both Stephen King and John Slattery. I highly recommend this book - one that has now topped my list of King favourites.

Eerily Good!
The king of suspense and spine chilling stories does it again in this one. Now in my top five of his novels. A thought and heart provoking exciting tale.

One of my all time favourites
First, John Slattery"s narration is freaking amazing. It totally upped the imapct of the story ,made all the characters, especially Edgar, feel like real living breathing people, gave me the creeps, made me laugh and more than once punched me in the heart bad enough to make me cry. I can see now the difference when a really good actor narrates a book.
Second, the book itself. The writing was beautiful, the characters all felt real, and the plot was super creepy. especially the first 2/3rds of the book. I may have hit pause on the book more than once to calm down when things got spooky. Everything about the paintings, I absolutely loved it.And all the relationships felt true.
I"ve re-listenedned to this one many many times. And every time it feels like I"m listening to a friend.
This maybe a weird thing to say about a horror story, but this book, for some reason, gives me great comfort.
The only negative I can think of is the last parts of the book . Until then everything was perfect. There"s a major gut punch, very well executed, and surprising incident that made me cry for real. But after that, slow buildup of horror seems to deflate. It is understandable though. Once you start explaining the spooks, it gets significantly less spooky. The section at the old house, the hunt for answers felt like a video game with bosses for each levels until the final boss fight, which kinda took away from the intensity of the story that had been there till now. There are also things related to Jack Cantori towards the end that feel like rushed,tacked on conveniences to move the plot along.
Still, the book overall remains a five star read. I keep visiting it over and over again.

a great King novel
This is a very good book. Some would say not one of King"s very best, but for me it was better than some major works like "IT". I liked that the supernatural elements come on slowly and only ramp up near the end. Essentially for a lot of the book it is about a man coming to grips with major injuries and a marital breakdown. The characters are well developed and very likable, like Wireman, and the relationship between the family members feel real. The narration is spot on as well. Strongly recommend.

as always mr king delivers an amazing story
this book was amazing! I wanted to listen to this book instead of to watch TV and Netflix so that does definitely say something :-)

Suspense for days!
A really great and suspenseful story and the narrator is really good. Highly recommend. One of Stephen Kings best in my opinion.

Stephen King is weird; and I love it.
as always Stephen King explains very complicated themes and regular day-to-day English. I really like the characters and I really enjoyed this book.

John Slattery is exceptional
I am a huge Stephen King fan and have read the majority of his books. Duma I read when it first was published. I enjoyed it although not my favourite. The reading of this book by John Slattery absolutely brings this book to life. Slattery is incredible throughout.
