Story
In the summer of 1862, a group of young artists led by the passionate and talented Edward Radcliffe descends upon Birchwood Manor in rural Oxfordshire. Their plan: to spend a secluded summer month in a haze of inspiration and creativity. But by the time their stay is over, one woman has been shot dead while another has disappeared; a priceless heirloom is missing; and Edward Radcliffe’s life is in ruins. Over 150 years later, Elodie Winslow, a young archivist in London, uncovers a leather satchel containing two seemingly unrelated items.

Reveal Not Worth The Lengthy Read/Listen
Reviewed: 2022-05-17
I am severely disappointed by this book. I loved The Lake House by Kate Morton and was expecting more of that excellence in The Clockmaker's Daughter. The only thing even remotely satisfying about this book however, was Joanne Froggatt's narration. The book consists mainly of build up with various charcters that after a few chapters become tedious and irrelevant. When it is finally revealed exactly what happened to the Clockmaker's Daughter, I was so underwhelmed and frustrated that I almost didn't finish the remaining 48 minutes left in the recording. By the end I couldn't help but feel I had wasted a cumulative total of 12 hours listening to this story and desperately wished I had chosen something, anything, else.

Story
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

Starts Out A Bit Slow But Worth Hanging In There!

After getting through the first few chapters this was a very interesting book! The author's depiction of H. H. Holmes was thrilling and also very eerie at times. Anyone fascinated by True Crime or psychology will really enjoy this book. Will be listening to it again!

And nobody (nobody!) can learn of the colossal mistake she made with the best man during a weak moment last spring. It was wrong, and there will not be a repeat. Absolutely not. Great Story and Refreshing
Reviewed: 2020-05-06
It was refreshing to listen to a story where the main characters are just happy. There aren't any stupid fights that make no sense, there's no denial of feelings throughout the whole book that make you want to slap the characters. It's just a good love story without the petty drama!

A Wild Ride and an Excellent Story

I'm not usually surprised while reading books. Usually I can see the plot coming a mile away, and I'm never surprised as the plot unfolds. This book surprised me throughout, and things happen so quickly it takes you a minute to absorb what just happened. Fantastic book, excellent characters, really made you feel all of the emotions!

Good But Incredibly Frustrating
Reviewed: 2020-04-22
It's interesting to me how the author can voice the thoughts and insecurities we all have, and explain them in a way that most cannot. The book was enjoyable and the characters were very well written. However, I found this book incredibly annoying and by the end of it I couldn't feel happy for the main character, and truly believed her love interest deserved better. I think the author intends for the readers to be frustrated when she's writing her books. I had the same frustration with The DUFF, where the main character is in complete denial and lies to herself throughout the whole book. More than once I would get annoyed and swear at something the main character had done, and the entire time I kept saying "No, that's not what he said. Why don't you just ask him?". Then it got worse when the main character's vendetta began hurting other people involved, and refused to even conceive the notion that she was wrong. I enjoyed the book, I like the ideas the author challenged and the questions she posed, and the side characters were excellent and I really related to them. I can't say the same for the main character, and by the final chapters I despised her and wished she had been written with more depth and intellect like many of the side characters in this book.
