Story
Nell McDaragh never knew her grandfather, the celebrated Irish poet Phil McDaragh. But his love poems seem to speak directly to her. Restless and wryly self-assured, at twenty-two Nell leaves her mother Carmel’s orderly home to find her own voice as a writer (mostly online, ghost-blogging for an influencer) and to live a poetical life. As she chases obsessive love, damage, and transcendence, in Dublin and beyond, her grandfather’s poetry seems to guide her home.

Such a good book. It has great characters that reveal themselves slowly and a reasonable, if simple, plot. But, it is also well written, and this is the reason I listened again - to catch anything I missed the first time. Will listen again at some point.

Story
"And see if there's any news about the missing girl." Life, as Smith used to say, is just one thing after another - as one investigation ends, a new one begins. But for reasons unknown to the rest of her team, DCI Cara Freeman will be haunted by the next case for the Kings Lake Central murder squad. They find themselves delving into the seamy side of life in the town, and one of their number will have departed before this new investigation is over. Perhaps Detective Sergeant Chris Waters should have seen it coming, but he has a lot more than work on his mind these days.

Still good characters, but the story ...

The story had some tangents and summary points that felt more like the author making a point than telling a story. I've listened to and enjoyed his previous works. This one wasn't my favourite.

I was worried about the supernatural aspects of this story, but there is enough in the characters and the writing strong enough that it all hangs together well enough. It didn't feel forced or over the top.

Story
As the story opens, Snowman is sleeping in a tree, mourning the loss of his beloved Oryx and his best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. How did everything fall apart so quickly? Why is he left with nothing but his haunting memories? Alone except for the green-eyed Children of Crake, he explores the answers to these questions in the double journey he takes - into his own past, and back to Crake's high-tech bubble-dome, where the Paradice Project unfolded and the world came to grief.

Listened to this book and the two others in the series soon after. Love the writing, with how things are revealed. Not sure if I can say more without giving too much away, but time well spent. Will probably listen to it again in a few months.

Dr. Raleigh is here. He’s the head counselor at the Two Adjustment Facility (TAF) I’m at. He died in an avalanche. Perry Whitcomb is here. I connected with him on Deadbook, Two’s version of Facebook. He was on my soccer team in middle school. He collapsed during one of our games. And get this, Heath Ledger is here. (Yeah, the Joker, himself.) He just had a new movie come out.

Feels dated
Reviewed: 2024-06-20
The plot is interesting enough, but the main character feels very dated and as the filter we see the word through, occasionally uncomfortable to listen to. The flow got awkward enough in one place that I had to rewind and relisten in case I'd skipped a chapter, but I didn't.

Unnecessary and constant tension
Reviewed: 2024-05-09
It has taken me two books to realize what bothers me about this series. After all, the mysteries are complex and unravel in way I should enjoy. The problem is that the book has constant tension, from mental health issues, fights with family and lovers, interfering authorities, bad guys, good guys etc. It makes the entire listening experience tense and not that enjoyable. The books would be better if there were both calm and tense bits.

Men writing women, but not all bad
Reviewed: 2024-05-01
The story is pretty good and the lead character's instability makes sense, but then there are random things thrown in that betray the writer is a man - using her cleavage to charm officials, as well how women over 50 are portrayed. Will read the next book, hoping the character levels out.

Story
As the mists roll over the fens and enigmatic lights twinkle in the distance, only the locals know their way along the hidden paths through the mysterious watery terrain of one of England's most beautiful and sometimes dangerous places. Detective Matt Ballard may have retired but there's still plenty going on in the fens to keep him busy. Someone trashes an old lady's garden and daubs her isolated cottage with hateful graffiti. Emilia Swain seems to be totally harmless, so why is she being targeted?

Painfully slow pacing

Not really a whodunnit since the solution to most of the mystery was obvious as soon as it was introduced. You just keep listening to see how the other characters will figure it out. There is a lot of psychological exploration in this book, which didn't really appeal to me. A bit of a departure for Ellis I would say.
Also, the Canadian accents and cadence of speech were 0% Canadian. They would have been passable as American though.

Judith Potts is 77 years old and blissfully happy. She lives on her own in a faded mansion just outside Marlow, there’s no man in her life to tell her what to do or how much whisky to drink, and to keep herself busy she sets crosswords for The Times newspaper. One evening, while out swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder. The local police don’t believe her story, so she decides to investigate for herself and is soon joined in her quest by Suzie, a salt-of-the-earth dog-walker, and Becks, the prim and proper wife of the local vicar.
