Story
Against all odds, three Slovakian sisters have survived years of imprisonment in the most notorious death camp in Nazi Germany: Auschwitz. Livia, Magda, and Cibi have clung together, nearly died from starvation and overwork, and the brutal whims of the guards in this place of horror. But now, the allies are closing in and the sisters have one last hurdle to face: the death march from Auschwitz, as the Nazis try to erase any evidence of the prisoners held there. Due to a last minute stroke of luck, the three of them are able to escape formation and hide in the woods for days.

Disappointed
Reviewed: 2024-09-14
I expected to enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed The Tattooist of Auschwitz but I was disappointed.
The three sisters usually came across as syrupy sweet. Perhaps this is how they accounted their story to the author but, for me, it was too much.
The narration was grating Even after 20 hours I never got used to the voices of the characters having an English (or Australian or New Zealand?) accent.
I'm not sure why there are so many 5 star reviews and I regret purchasing this audiobook.

Disappointing
Reviewed: 2024-07-14
I have very much enjoyed some of Kristin Hannah's books; "The Nightingale" is still a favorite. However, I had to make myself finish "Magic Hour".
The premise is interesting but the story dragged and was quite predictable. The performance was terrible. Ellie sounded like a breathy teenager. George's voice was like fingernails on a chalkboard. He is supposed to be American? Alice's very slow language development and her baby voice was grating.
I persevered, hoping it would get better. It did not. I should have cut my losses after a couple of hours and returned it.

In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

I loved the elegant prose!
The narrator did a fabulous job of all the characters.
I was sad to finish this as I fear it will be a long time before I find another book as wonderful as A Gentleman in Moscow!

In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

The narration was distracting
Reviewed: 2024-05-09
For the most part, Meryl Streep did a great job narrating this book. Of course she would - she is one of the reasons I purchased this book. I didn't like Maisie's voice and I don't know why the producer felt it was necessary to make her voice different from the other female characters'.
For me, Meryl Streep's voice and cadence are so distinctive that I could not visualize Laura/Lara; I kept seeing Meryl, right up to the end of the book.
I did enjoy the story and will look for other books by Ann Patchett, as I also enjoyed The Dutch House very much.

Story
It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

Distracting sound effects
Reviewed: 2024-04-20
The story - abridged too much. I have not previously read the book and I'm not sure this audio production captured enough of the story.
The production - sound effects were often too loud and I couldn't hear the narration. At other times the sound effects substituted for narration and I couldn't follow the story.

Too much explicit sex for my taste. I wish someone had put a warning on this book like they do for TV shows and movies.
I find it easier to skip over 'icky' parts in physical books and e-books - just skip ahead a few pages. Not as easy with an audio book.
Regarding the performance, female voices were good. Male voices were not enjoyable.

The narration was very well done. I enjoyed the first person perspective and the time travel concept.
What I did not enjoy was all the seemingly ridiculous (to me) conclusions Mallory came to to solve the mystery. Just my opinion.
