Story
Detective Constable Angus MacVicar has just landed his dream job – transferred out of uniform and assigned to Oldcastle’s biggest ongoing murder investigation: Operation Telegram, hunting the “Fortnight Killer”. Every two weeks another couple is targeted. One victim is left at the scene, their corpse used as a twisted message board. The second body is never seen again. This should be the perfect chance for Angus to prove himself, but instead of working on the investigation’s front line, he’s lumbered with the forensic psychologist from hell.

Disappointed

I was quite disappointed. This book just doesn’t compare to the Logan books. Figured out the “surprise” immediately.
Fife is a great character. Angus was OK but no Logan. The rest left a lot to be desired. Ellie was downright annoying.
I can’t decide right now if I will read/listen to the next book. I avoid American police procedurals due to the outrageous amount of gun violence. The next is set to go in the US. Will it “go American?” I found a lot of series tend to improve but I’ll definitely have to think about this one.

Story
When forensic scientist Rhona MacLeod is brought in to analyse a shallow grave on Scotland’s west coast, she is disturbed by a bundle of twigs crafted into a stickman and left in the victim’s mouth. Then, when a young woman is reported missing from a nearby campsite with another sinister figurine left in her van, it seems that someone is targeting wild campers. An idyllic coastline known for providing peace and serenity, now the area is a hunting ground.

McCall Smith is the only author of cozy mysteries that I’ll read. He doesn’t reduce himself to the silliness in most of them. Intelligent books but still a fun read or “listen”. The narrator was very good too.

I really enjoyed the Barton series: no stupid relationships between old male detective and young female detective. No unnecessary violence. But still great stories. This is the same. Highly recommend it and am waiting for the next one.

Narration was dreadful

This is a lesson in how to ruin a good book. The narrator sounded like he was plucked out of 1940s radio shows. It was painful at times. No wonder the book was free. I really hope later books have a modern narrator.

Story
Primrose Hill, London. Criminal profiler Ziba MacKenzie arrives at the scene of a gruesome murder with a disturbing sense of déjà vu. Nine days earlier, another woman’s body was found: same location, same MO, same physical appearance. For the police, it’s clear a new serial killer is on the loose. But for Ziba, it’s even more sinister—because the victims look just like her. Ziba has been the focus of a killer’s interest before and knows that if she gets too close again this case could be her last.

One little problem…
Reviewed: 2022-12-02
You figure out the killer immediately, but why doesn’t anyone else even consider it? The problem is that the author should have been more subtle. Make the reader wonder or think they’re clever. I don’t want to give it away because the resolution is good. It’s just that all along the reader knows it doesn’t make sense. She’s deliberately done it so it makes you question it and in the end you know something is coming. Anyway it’s a pretty good good book.

Hate the Narrator

The books are good but I hate the narrator so much that I don’t think I can listen to another. He sounds like he’s in a 1940’s radio drama. Oy! Why? It just ruins it.

Another excellent book in this series. What a treat! You’re given enough clues to guess and there are enough twists to throw you off. The author narrates her own books and she’s better than most of the narrators I’ve listened to.

He is alive, but barely, and his body shows signs of a dark religious ritual. With a revolving list of suspects and the media spotlight firmly on her, Henley is left with more questions than answers as she attempts to untangle both crimes. But when another body appears, the case takes on a new urgency. Unless she can apprehend the killer, the next victim may just be Henley herself.
