Kit Darling is a maid with a snooping problem. She’s the “invisible girl,” compelled to poke into her wealthy clients’ closely guarded lives. It’s a harmless hobby until Kit sees something she can’t unsee in the home of her brand-new clients: a secret so dark it could destroy the privileged couple expecting their first child. This makes Kit dangerous to the couple. In turn, it makes the couple—who might kill to keep their secret—dangerous to Kit.

Gripping and twisty! Being from Vancouver, I enjoyed the setting. Accents by the narrator were hard to take at times, especially Benoit.

Slow Burn
Reviewed: 2024-06-09
This book was really slow and a slog until about chapter 27 which was well into part three I believe.
Then it gets pretty exciting.
I found the narrator’s voice at first difficult to get used to. Seemed like a no-nonsense way of speaking. But she did do justice to the different voices! And I don’t know how people can read these kind of books who have children. I am child free and found the theme of the missing children disturbing enough just to me! I also didn’t like the two main characters. The wife and husband. They really didn’t deserve to have a happy ending the way they acted throughout and the decisions they made. But once the book picked up, it got entertaining!

Clever Thriller
Reviewed: 2024-05-11
One of the best narrated novels I’ve listened to so far! Her use of voices was excellent. A great thriller craftily intertwined with a real life true crime. And even though it was fictional, I still enjoyed the description like setting of Victoria/Sooke/Oak Bay.

The beautiful waitress from the restaurant last night has been found lying dead in the sand. And the police want to question your husband about it. Sure, you saw him glance at her over dinner a few times, but you know he didn’t have anything to do with the poor girl’s death.

A bit of a snoozer
Reviewed: 2024-03-17
Has a twist at the end, but it’s kind of lame. Okay story, but just didn’t captivate me. The relationship between the three women kind of droned on and on without much happening. My mind would wander, but when I would rewind it, I realized I didn’t miss anything. Too much repetition, and going over and over the same thing.
Spoiler: the author tried to wrap it up with a big twist at the end, but it just didn’t land because Sam who accosted the server with such vengeance and violence, seems so out of character. And then just a couple of days later, she decides to divorce her husband after begging the server to leave her husband alone? Whaaat?

Drab & Mundane
Reviewed: 2023-11-24
Waste of a credit! Narrator sounds like he’s speaking at a poet reading with a drab mundane, but performative way of speaking. The story is also pretty boring. Not sure if you can even really call it a story. There is no plot. Just two people going through a mundane way of living. I found myself not even wanting to listen, so I just decided to stop and pick another title. Big relief not to suffer through that anymore. I rarely stop books, but there’s too many better ones out there to spend time, persevering, and struggling through this one!

Story
Mia, the irreverent, hyperanalytical twenty-year-old daughter, has an explanation for everything—which is why she isn’t initially concerned when her father and younger brother Eugene don’t return from a walk in a nearby park. They must have lost their phone. Or stopped for an errand somewhere. But by the time Mia’s brother runs through the front door bloody and alone, it becomes clear that the father in this tight-knit family is missing and the only witness is Eugene, who has the rare genetic condition Angelman syndrome and cannot speak.

Outstanding thought-provoking book
Reviewed: 2023-10-17
An excellent listen! Clever, captivating, and quirky. Best book,I’ve listened to in terms of voices. Thought-provoking themes and motifs, centring around not judging a book by its cover, pursuit of happiness, stereotyping other cultures, as well as stereotyping people that we perceive to have disabilities.
I only wished for a more happier ending, but it still ties everything up in a positive, satisfying way.

Tedious beginning-got better

Almost didn’t continue listening to this for a couple reasons. One, I can’t imagine as a parent losing a child this way, and I thought it would be too heart wrenching. And two, coming on the heels of “The Family Across the Street” it became tiresome to read once again about how a man gets so screwed up over women and is influenced/manipulated so easily by their father. But then it did get much more interesting and I had to keep listening to find out what happened. I started to look forward to listening. Another weakness, the character, Megan was portrayed as very bright, but she sure did miss a lot of red flags! And her husband who supposedly is a detective also could have done better. Overall, a good, captivating, well-woven story, and the narrator did a wonderful job. A simple story worth listening to if you’re not into anything too complicated. Easy to keep track of the characters and the story.

Story
You’d never know what secrets the house on Hogarth Street holds - what’s happening, right this second, behind closed doors. An emerald-green front lawn. Perfectly trimmed hedging. An ivy-covered front gate and the scent of honeysuckle in the air. In the yard, two scooters lie on the grass. One blue, one pink, belonging to five-year-old twins.

Easy to listen to, and keep track of characters. The woman reading the story did an excellent job with the character voices. There is a little twist that I did not see coming. It’s nice to be surprised because so many books are so predictable. Great use of heat in the setting (stifling hot weather adds to the tension). Love the characters Gladys and Logan!

Took a while to get absorbed

Took me a while to get accustomed to the narrator. It was kind of annoying how she was trying to do the men’s voices, and really annoying when she tried to do the “monster” voice.. the characters were mostly useless and pathetic people. Hard to root for our heroine - portrayed as a super smart girl, so it was unfathomable the decisions and thought processes she conveyed for a good portion of the novel. However, I think it was around chapter 23, where the book actually starts to get interesting and things started to progress and all come together, so really enjoyed the second half of the book, but the first half was a slog.
