The characters are one dimensional
Reviewed: 2024-12-15
This book was so disappointing. The characters are one dimensional and so is the story line. There were virtually no twists and turns, such as you find in every mystery novel. At the end of the book when you find out who was responsible for the attack, it is unsatisfying.

I enjoyed this book, but some parts were more interesting than others. There were so many characters and the story jumps around between them, so at times it was hard to follow. The narrator did a good job, but his voice didn't seem like a good match for the main character. I wish we could see pictures of the characters in real life. I was able to search online and find a group photo, so that was satisfying.

Very good story, but not amazing
Reviewed: 2021-12-16
I would give this story three and a half stars if I could. It was a very good story, but not amazing. I loved listening to the narrator's Irish accent. However, the story wasn't overly suspenseful. Also, the main character was supposed to be training as a surgeon, but I didn't feel she came across believably as a young doctor.

Story
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Way too much chess play by play
Reviewed: 2021-11-23
It was a good story but I got really tired of listening to so much play by play of all of the chess moves. if you are a chess enthusiast then you might enjoy the frequent descriptions of what is happening in the chess games, but quite frankly it is tedious for someone who does not play or care much about chess.

Excellent Story!

This story keeps you wanting more! It is an extremely long listen, but I always looked forward to hearing what would come next. I would have given the narration five stars, but the narrator speaks in a British accent for characters who are New Yorkers, so it didn't feel authentic in those parts.
