Story
With global warming out of control, large swathes of North America have been struck by famine and drought and are now known as the Desert. A young woman sets out across this dry, hostile landscape, gradually building an arcane apparatus she believes will bring rain to the parched earth. Jesse lives alone, far from civilization. Once, he too made rain, but he stopped when his abilities caused fatalities, bringing down not just rain but scorpions, strange snakes, and spiders.

Story
Kira Forrest is a survivor. She's risen above the pain of her beginnings to become a war hero only to leave it all behind in the pursuit of a simple life. Now a salvager, she makes a living sifting through the wreckage of dead alien ships from a war that nearly brought humanity to its knees. After her ship takes damage, she's forced to re-route to a space station where her past and present collide with dangerous consequences. Kira's existence holds the key to a faltering peace treaty with the Tuann - a technologically advanced alien race who dislikes and distrusts all humans.

Really enjoyed the first chapter of a space explorer daring the unknown derelict alien vessel. Then she got stuck in a tug of war between an earth military who resents her but wants to use her and an alien race that doesn't like her, but wants to use her. And the last 13 chapters have been all grumblely resentful blabbering towards our heroine who isn't exploring space. She is powerless, doesn't stick up for herself and battles with shame for her past. Maybe it gets better, but I don't have the patience to wade through any more of this garbage.

Story
Debauched, divorced, and courting death, Billy Ray Schafer is a comedian who has forgotten how to laugh. Over the course of seven spun-out days across the American Southwest, he travels from from hell gig to hell gig in search of a reason to keep living in this bleak and violent glimpse into the psyche of a thoroughly ruined man. Ex-inmate, ex-husband, ex-father - comedian is the only title Schafer has left. Trapped in the wreckage of his wasted career, Billy Ray knows the answer to the question: What happens when the opportunity doesn't come - or worse - it comes and goes?

Beauty in the imperfection.

This is a raw experience of a book and I found it unapologetically wonderful to listen to. Each chapter is narrated by a different real comedian of differing narration ability / experience / microphone / location etc. For me, there is a lived authenticity in each of their performances that shines through and gives the story an amazingly organic feel.
I have over 18 months of listening to audiobooks and I have a low tolerance for poorly narrated or produced books. This is the one exception for me where the eclectic narration performances enhance the experience. If the synopsis is at all intriguing - imho - the performances won't let you down. Enjoy

Story
The Academy of Chaenbalu has stood against magic for centuries. Hidden from the world, acting from the shadows, it trains its students to detect and retrieve magic artifacts, which it jealously guards from the misuse of others. Because magic is dangerous: Something that heals can also harm, and a power that aids one person may destroy another. Of the academy’s many students, only the most skilled can become Avatars - warrior thieves, capable of infiltrating the most heavily guarded vaults - and only the most determined can be trusted to resist the lure of magic.

this is a little in-direct compliment but...one thing that stands out for me was the lack of "oh, fer fks sake" moments. There was no "she killed my parents, my best friend and blew up my favorite ice cream shop, but I still love her!" kind of writing that creeps into books. anywhoooo, a solid 4.

A little too quiet for my taste

I finished the while series, which says something. It is a series to listen to while you do something else.
biggest challenge with the story was how unstructured the whole crew was. It made for a lot of whining "You always want to go left!! Well I want to go right!" Insert sulking.
I almost threw in the towel a few times because of that. Definitely a "meh" type of series for me.

Bart Simpson the "I didn't do it" kid
Reviewed: 2019-06-02
I don't think I am going to finish the book. it is just way too much of the same. Ah, Joe... remember that problem I sort of mentioned might be a problem... Dammit Skippy, what now?! Joe figures out a solution, Skippy is embarrassed, Joe makes fun of Skippy, Skippy makes fun of Joe. Add some 80's TV and movie references, Skippy sings. Joe gets embarrassed and everyone laughs at him. ...AND repeat. And repeat, and repeat. I don't laugh anymore. I smile a little, but ultimately, its Bart Simpson's character run on Krusty's show as the I didn't do it kid. 4th time on stage, audience just stares at him and you hear someone cough.
It is lazy writing. I don't see how the reviews give this one such glowing rating numbers. Are people trying to be gentle with the authors feelings? When I put up a board to frame in a furnace duct, my client said it wasn't level. It was startling because she is a loud talker and came out side while I was cutting some drywall and politely shouted at me. (She just loud talked at me.) But it wasn't level. I was lazy, measured off the pipe and marked poorly. I got out my 4' level and made it right. Looks good now. It was level, I got lazy. This book is not very good. Other books in the series, laugh out loud fun.
If you liked the previous books in the series, don't get this book. If you tell someone their work isn't good enough. They will make it better. I would be very surprised if Craig Alanson is super satisfied with this book. Craig, this is falling off the rails. Get it back on dammit, because you can.
