A very good book but a very dense and boring first 80%. Filled with a great deal of historical fact but if you're listening to the audiobook, it drones on and on and on, even so. You could get away with listening to the last couple chapters, which are focused more on contemporary times and future, and still get a lot out of this book. You really need to be heavily into the topic and it still took me months to get through. I kept going back though!

Story
For generations, everything has been getting faster, better, and cheaper. Finally, we reached the point that almost anything you could ever want could be sent to your home within days - even hours - of when you decided you wanted it. America made that happen, but now America has lost interest in keeping it going.

Interesting Views, Interesting Times!
Reviewed: 2023-02-20
Pete Zeihan has parsed a lot of demographic, scientific and political data and summarized his theory nicely, using that data. There are variables and unknowns that may alter this thesis, as he admits in the prologue, and real data can be used to support opposite viewpoints. With that said, I don't agree with his thesis, but it is well delivered. Well worth the listen.

Can’t Hurt Me, David Goggins’ smash hit memoir, demonstrated how much untapped ability we all have but was merely an introduction to the power of the mind. In Never Finished, Goggins takes you inside his Mental Lab, where he developed the philosophy, psychology, and strategies that enabled him to learn that what he thought was his limit was only his beginning and that the quest for greatness is unending.

I think only those with a David Goggins' mindset won't think this is about brag and ego. It's not. It's a testament to overcoming extreme difficulty and pushing through. It takes a certain level of confidence to push oneself beyond what most people will attempt. And only certain people with a certain drive will do so. And they will do so because they NEED to. They don't have a choice. Thanks for telling your story and joining in the narration, which adds a ton of credibility to your story. And welcome to Canada!

Story
Blockchains are new technology layers that rewire the Internet and threaten to side-step older legacy constructs and centrally served businesses. At its core, a blockchain injects trust into the network, cutting off some intermediaries from serving that function and creatively disrupting how they operate. Metaphorically, blockchains are the ultimate non-stop computers. Once launched, they never go down, and offer an incredible amount of resiliency, making them dependable and attractive for running a new generation of decentralized services and software.

Story
Our global economic system is broken. But we can replace the current picture of global upheaval, unsustainability, and uncertainty with one of an economy that works for all people, and the planet. First, we must eliminate rising income inequality within societies where productivity and wage growth has slowed. Second, we must reduce the dampening effect of monopoly market power wielded by large corporations on innovation and productivity gains. And finally, the short-sighted exploitation of natural resources that is corroding the environment must end.

Proposed Solution to Problematic Modern Capitalism
Reviewed: 2022-09-06
Despite the fear, uncertainty and doubt around The Great Reset concept, it is developed and written by a qualified voice. Klaus Schwab has chosen to go beyond the norm of merely criticizing the dysfunctional ways of the interwoven political and economic ecosystems to suggesting a detailed solution to the clear imbalances and injustices that are inherent therein.
Whether or not one agrees with all points or any points at all, it is a discussion that needs to occur and it is a move towards societal progression, like it or not.

Story
An international conspiracy among powerful bankers, business leaders, and government officials; closed-door meetings in the Swiss Alps; and calls for a radical transformation of every society on earth - the Great Reset sounds like it is one henchman-with-an-eyepatch away from being the plot for the next James Bond movie. But The Great Reset is not a work of fiction. It is a highly influential movement among the world’s elite to “reset” the global economy using banks, government programs, and environmental, social, and governance metrics.

Great Factual Info, Typical American Bias
Reviewed: 2022-08-20
Was more thorough than expected and presented well-documented facts, quotes and plausible theories. To me it stops short of conspiracy theory - just. it is well worth the listen/read. However, Beck's America-centric biases are clear and annoying and his blind faith in free market economics to lead his believers to the promised land of heaven is short-sighted. To be fair, he does present both sides of all arguments quite well, but his disdain for any kind of social programming shows through. The spewing of patriotic pleas and virtriol for modern government at the end of the book is a little sickening, tbh, but it's not enough for me to remove only one star from my overall review score. He's loyal to his cause. He reads it with passion and holds interest not only with the story, which is great, but with his style.
He is correct, there are many things that should concern society in the current transitional period we are in, but keep in mind that he's on the extreme right in this debate (if there really is a debate). There's a saying: "You can't stop progress". That's where we are, so we should be educated on what that progress is and the shape it will quite possibly take. And that's why this book is a must listen/read.

Story
William Strauss and Neil Howe posit the history of America as a succession of generational biographies, beginning in 1584 and encompassing every one through the children of today. Their bold theory is that each generation belongs to one of four types and that these types repeat sequentially in a fixed pattern. The vision of Generations allows us to plot a recurring cycle in American history - a cycle of spiritual awakenings and secular crises - from the founding colonists through the present day and well into this millennium.

It was difficult to follow some concepts without the tables and diagrams but the gist of the research and developing theories comes through over time and with repetition. they don't hit on all of their predictions for the first 22 years of the 21st century but they don't claim they will (despite the use of strongly certain language) and nobody should expect it, unless from Nostradamus. Nor did he even succeed. A grand contribution to understanding social history and human cycles.

I expected much more than a bad version of Camilla's insightful book. At times this sounded like a celebrity trash rag written for the purpose of slaying popular crypto personalities with "he said/she said" commentary, running off in pointless directions. There was some good stuff, but not much new other than the personal frying of most of the founders of Ethereum. Could have/should have skipped this one, frankly.

Story
We live in an extraordinary time. Technological advances are happening at a rate faster than our ability to understand them, and in a world that moves faster than we can imagine, we cannot afford to stand still. These advances bring efficiency and abundance - and they are profoundly deflationary. Our economic systems were built for a pre-technology era when labor and capital were inextricably linked - an era that counted on growth and inflation and an era where we made money from inefficiency.

Clearly Detailed Generational Analysis
Reviewed: 2021-12-28
While there is definitely political bias from time to time throughout, the analysis is intricately based on American perspectives, but still very useful in identifying general traits prominent in generations worldwide, as well as the causes of those traits (as far as American standards have influenced the world more and more).
The authors were careful not to reach for exactness but rather ensured discussion on multiple possible outcomes to multiple possible events, or event categories. However, they were clear that there would be some form of crisis during this fourth turning. They could hit the mark on that point for any "turning" but again, what is more relevant is how the generation that is taking over power during this turning will handle the crises that occur, and how that will affect future generations and turnings.
Overall quite good and though there's obviously some guess work that goes into this type of theorizing, it is a very carefully constructed theoretical framework and deserves attention from scholars and futurists alike.
