Story
As the war begins, Hanna Rombauer, a young German woman, is sent to live with her aunt and uncle after her mother’s death. Thrown into a life of luxury she never expected, Hanna soon finds herself unwillingly matched with an SS officer twenty years her senior. The independence that her mother lovingly fostered in her is considered highly inappropriate as the future wife of an up-and-coming officer and she is sent to a “bride school.” There, in a posh villa on the outskirts of town, Hanna is taught how to be a “proper” German wife.

I really enjoy this narrator. I've listened to a lot of books she's narrated.
the story line is pretty interesting. I read a lot of history and I learned some things here I didn't know before.
that being said- the book is a bit short. the author could have expanded on a few things and why she didn't only she knows. too bad really. would have made the book stronger.
still recommend.

Great story but the narrator threw me off on more than one occasion. Her voice doesn't change from character to character and in a group setting it can be puzzling at first.
Love the idea of the story for the most part.

In that world lives Elimina Dubois, one of only 100 children selected as a social experiment by the Mainland government to be taken from their mothers in the Gutter and raised in the land of opportunity. I finished it but this book could have been done so much better. the premise is excellent but it reads like an abridged novel. I actually checked about halfway through thinking I made a mistake and purchased the abridged version. they could have expanded on a lot of the story lines and cut out some of the ridiculous nonsense words thrown in to make sentences longer - or exist at all. a better editor would have helped too.

One of the most acclaimed novels in recent memory, Charles Frazier's Cold Mountain is a masterpiece that is at once an enthralling adventure, a stirring love story, and a luminous evocation of a vanished American in all its savagery, solitude, and splendor.

the narration was so awful I barely forced my way through this book.
it droned on and on I couldn't even recap what the story was about if someone asked me. background noise only. if I try again I'd rather read the paperback but that's a long shot that I would spend the money. I kept waiting for something to happen and nothing did. dreary novel. dreary narration.

by far the worst narration and production of an audible book. buy the paperback and read that. don't waste your time or credit on this. It was an absolute struggle to get through this book, and not because of the story.

Story
Barbara was 12 when she was admitted to the psychiatric hospital Aston Hall in 1971. From a troubled home, she'd hoped she would find sanctuary there. But during her stay, Barbara was systematically drugged and abused by its head physician, Dr Kenneth Milner. Somehow, eventually, she started to campaign for answers. This is a shocking account of how vulnerable children were preyed upon by the doctor entrusted with their care.

I love everything about this story. The narration is perfect. the storyline and writing are fantastic. Only one thing that drove me bonkers - the unbelievable amount that Gwen says "lapis lazuli". It was particularly irritating in the beginning of this book away as this book became my action orientated. I'm surprised the editor didn't cut some of them out. regardless, otherwise an excellent excellent story.

This was a great prequel to the series. the story line is fantastic. the narration is very good - except - for the singing parts. it's too bad they didn't hire someone who could sing those parts but otherwise it's a very good story.
