Story
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

A shocking and poignant account of nuclear war
Reviewed: 2024-10-07
I grew up in the late Cold War in a house where my brother and I were taught about what to fear about nuclear war. Our father constructed a bomb shelter in the basement and in this time of concern for war we lived and existed. This book brings to life in our modern world what we feared we might experience if war were to happen. In an hour of elapsed time our 21 century world is blown back to the Stone Age. The book provides a chilling reminder of the brutality of dictatorships and the power that leaders of those countries possess. It is a compelling account of the countdown to Armageddon. In literature we have the book On the Beach and in film Dr Strangelove and now this nonfiction work. Hold those that are dear to you close and pray that we never experience what this book tells with precision. All in all an excellent book.

This book presents an honest assessment of Hoover. It is a lengthy book that will not disappoint the reader. One sees his private and public life with clarity. Unfortunately Hoover strove to manipulate and build the reputation of the FBI in a standard that would not tolerate proactive change. He is a man of his time period and few would accept his principles today without question. He is not a man to be liked nor respected but he was determined in his commitment to his ideals. G-Man is an excellent portrait of this American icon.

Story
Why do we embalm the deceased? Why are funerals so expensive? Is there a reason coffins are shaped the way they are? Where does the tradition of viewing the body come from? Ceremonies for honoring the deceased are crucial parts of our lives, but few people know where our traditional practices come from—and what they reveal about our history, culture, and beliefs about death. In Last Rites, author Todd Harra takes listeners on a fascinating exploration of American funeral customs—exploring where they came from, what they mean, and how they are still evolving.

In KL, Wachsmann fills this glaring gap in our understanding. He not only synthesizes a new generation of scholarly work, much of it untranslated and unknown outside of Germany, but also presents startling revelations, based on many years of archival research, about the functioning and scope of the camp system.

In one volume the story of Germany’s decent into a period of history marked by the total degradation and destruction of the people of Europe. This is the story of Gypsies, Poles, political prisoners, homosexuals, Russian prisoners of war and the Jews. Placed in “protective custody” the existence of such people as enemies of the Third Reich saw their lives in jeopardy as they were imprisoned and worked to death in inhuman conditions. The book clearly outlines the creation, development and massive expansion of the KL system. It is a study told with cold facts enhanced by personal stories of both those detained and those who abused the prisoners. It is a chapter of history that must be told. The only detriment to the book is the use of “character voices” to articulate personal reflections. These narrations detract from the seriousness of the book. On the whole this is a massive literary work and a true statement of this time period. I initially read the book a number of years ago and it was useful to hear it again on Audible. I highly recommend this book for those interested in the history of the not only the Holocaust but also the decline of the German judicial and social systems under the Nazi government.

Story
Germany's winter campaign of 1941-1942 has commonly been seen as its "first defeat". In Retreat from Moscow, David Stahel argues that, in fact, it was its first strategic success in the east. Though the Red Army managed to push the Wehrmacht back from Moscow, the Germans lost far fewer men (one to six), frustrated their enemy's strategic plan, and emerged in the spring unbroken and poised to recapture the initiative.

The author provides details missing from other books on this front during WW2 - namely the logistics and medical aid provided to the German army. The narrator has clear and precise diction and a pleasant tone of voice.

Story
In January 1918, as World War I raged on, a new and terrifying virus began to spread across the globe. In three successive waves, from 1918 to 1919, influenza killed more than 50 million people. German soldiers termed it Blitzkatarrh, British soldiers referred to it as Flanders Grippe, but worldwide, the pandemic gained the notorious title of “Spanish flu”. Nowhere on earth escaped: the United States recorded 550,000 deaths (five times its total military fatalities in the war) while European deaths totaled more than two million.

Nazi Germany killed approximately 13 million civilians and other noncombatants in deliberate policies of mass murder, overwhelmingly during the war years. Almost half the victims were Jewish, systematically destroyed in the Holocaust, the core of the Nazis’ pan-European racial purification program. Alex Kay argues that the genocide of European Jewry can also be examined in the wider context of Nazi mass killing.

Story
While the Germans knew an invasion was inevitable, no one knew where or when it would fall. Those manning Hitler's mighty Atlantic Wall may have felt secure in their bunkers, but they had no conception of the fury and fire that was about to break. After the initial assaults of June established an Allied bridgehead, a state of stalemate prevailed. The Germans fought with great courage - hindered by lack of supplies and overwhelming Allied control of the air. This book describes the catastrophe that followed, in a unique look at the war from the losing side.

Story
Dawn on Sunday, June 22, 1941 saw the opening onslaughts of Operation Barbarossa as German forces stormed forward into the Soviet Union. Few of them were to survive the five long years of bitter struggle. A posting to the Eastern Front during the Second World War was rightly regarded with dread by the German soldiers. They saw epic battles such as Stalingrad and Kursk, and yet it was a daily war of attrition which ultimately proved fatal for Hitler's ambition and the German military machine.
