Story
Polly, Annie, Elizabeth, Catherine, and Mary-Jane are famous for the same thing, though they never met. What they had in common was the year of their murders: 1888. The person responsible was never identified, but the character created by the press to fill that gap has become far more famous than any of these five women. For more than a century, newspapers have been keen to tell us that "the Ripper" preyed on prostitutes. Not only is this untrue, as historian Hallie Rubenhold has discovered, but it has prevented the real stories of these fascinating women from being told.

Amongst the plethora of Ripper information, this book stands out as an important antidote to the gruesome murders. With her careful research and beautiful writing style, Ms. Rubenhold transforms the five women from dismissed "prostitutes" into real life women with hopes, dreams, families and shortcomings, i.e. human beings who deserve to be remembered far more than the monster who killed them.

Story
The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ provides an almost complete record of the words and works of Jesus Christ, including those years about which the New Testament Gospels are silent. It begins with Jesus's birth in Bethlehem and goes on to describe his 18 years of study in the East, his ascension from the Mount of Olives, and his travels to the monasteries of Tibet and the temples of Egypt, India, Persia, and Greece. Levi spent over 40 years preparing this document in order to tell the story of a much more complex Jesus than previously known.

Message lost in "preachiness" of performance
Reviewed: 2024-09-26
Beautiful book about Love being Christ's one and only message. But the message is dimmed by the "fire and brimstone" performance with cheesy organ music. The narrator inserts himself into the narrative in a negative way. I suggest hard copy.

For decades, Sandra Brown’s life has been intertwined with someone she has never met: an eleven year-old girl named Moira Anderson – who disappeared from their hometown of Coatbridge, Scotland, in 1957. It became one of the oldest cold cases in Scottish history. Sandra lived just around the corner from Moira. She grew up hearing about the missing girl, whose memory haunted the town. But she never imagined that, one day, she would be the one trying to uncover what happened. Or that her search for answers would reveal secrets and lies so close to home.

A genuine performance of a heart wrenching story. The listener cannot fail to be drawn in, to root for Moira and for Sandra in her quest to right a grave wrong. This story had so many twists and turns that I listened well into the wee hours and I predict any other listener will too.

I enjoyed this story, although I found the ending a little abrupt with some threads left hanging. And the violence vs the matter at stake was a mismatch for me. Danny Pino was the perfect narrator for this tale.

A bittersweet but satisfying ending to the Penn Cage saga. I wonder if it's the last book for Greg Isles because sadly he too is battling cancer. I hope not!
I will say I did not like the narration. On 1.0x the voice is much to slow. Speeding it up helps but then he sounds like Batman in the 60s TV series. (Every sentence sounds like it ends in an exclamation mark)

Millions of Amor Towles fans are in for a treat as he shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages.

Jack Reacher is Jack Reacher
Reviewed: 2023-10-15
I am listening to all the Jack Reacher novels. Predictable but fun.
My advice: Listen at a speed of 1.5x or higher. Narrator's voice is much too slow at 1.0x and will put you to sleep. The higher speed makes the story move at a thriller speed which is, I'm sure, the way Lee Child meant it to be read.

Story
Between 1993 and 1998, eight women went missing from an area around Dublin that became known as the ‘Vanishing Triangle’. Was there a link? Speculation abounded. There were whispers of a serial killer, responsible for some, if not all, of these cases. But nobody was ever brought to justice. Twenty years later, the brutal murder of Jastine Valdez disturbs crime novelist Claire McGowan into action.

Review of The Vanishing Triangle
Reviewed: 2022-04-02
Such an important review of the facts surrounding the disappearances of these women and girls whose lives were cut short and of unanswered questions. An indictment of those who remained silent and/or complacent and of the seemingly universal indifference to the plight of women who are judged not worthy of attention.
That said, Ms. McGowan ends on a hopeful note that these attitudes are changing and that advances in technology may help bring some of these women home and, perhaps more importantly, help to prevent future incidents of violence against women.

Story
Most people know Andrew McCarthy from his movie roles in Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo's Fire, Weekend at Bernie's, and Less Than Zero, and as a charter member of Hollywood's Brat Pack. That iconic group of ingenues and heartthrobs has come to represent both a genre of film and an era of pop culture. In his memoir, McCarthy focuses his gaze on that singular moment in time. The result is a revealing look at coming of age in a maelstrom, reckoning with conflicted ambition, innocence, addiction, and masculinity.

Ms. Trump's searing portrait of Donald and his family dynamics will stay with you long after you've finished reading. She exposes not only what he is, but also why. In an in depth and unflinching way she shows how Donald and his siblings were both shaped and scarred by a father who was a sociopath. This book also highlights the peril that America has been placed in due to his presidency, but its timely release may yet offer a glimmer of hope.
