Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
À propos de cet audio
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a 2003 O Henry Prize winner, and was shortlisted for the 2002 Caine Prize for African Writing and the 2004 Orange Prize. In Purple Hibiscus, she recounts the story of a young Nigerian girl searching for freedom. Although her father is greatly respected within their community, 15-year-old Kambili knows a frighteningly strict and abusive side to this man. In many ways, she and her family lead a privileged life, but Kambili and her brother, Jaja, are often punished for failing to meet their father’s expectations. After visiting her aunt and cousins, Kambili dreams of being part of a loving family. But a military coup brings new tension to Nigeria and her home, and Kambili wonders if her dreams will ever be fulfilled. Adichie’s striking and poetic language reveals a land and a family full of strife, but fighting to survive. A rich narration by South African native Lisette Lecat perfectly complements this inspiring tale.

A story of quiet love and perseverance
Although I found the book slow in the beginning, with each chapter I got more and more wrapped into the story and its outcome…the narration brought me along and made me feel like I was right here feeling all the emotions she was portraying…well done!! Loved it!!

A very good first story
A very good story by a favoured author. Not as strong as Half of a Yellow Sun or Americanah, but still satisfying. The narration by Lisette Lecat is excellent.

Powerful
I can see why this author is so highly spoken of. This was a stunning book. Insights into some aspects of life in Nigeria’s culture and politics, but more so into universal aspects of family, love, devotion, abuse, and how it all intertwines.

Chilling!
This story reminds me of The Handmaid’s Tale. Some parts made me shudder and I still shudder when I think of them. Thoroughly enjoyed it even though it was horrifying at times.

Still a great read!
I read this book as a young child many years ago and decided to give it another go when I came across it on Audible. I"m very pleased to see that this story still holds up to the high praise I gave it as a young girl. It hits very close to home, being an Igbo woman from Nigeria with parents who were basically partial representation of Eugene (without the cruel abuse). I admire the narrator"s effort. However, seeing as the Igbo names, words, and phrases are in my language, it was very hard to look past the mispronunciations at times. But, major credits for even attempting it.

Spoons hard truths, like ice cream
Heavy with hard truths, things you know, when you hear them, are not just stories but lived experience. This is not a beach read. You’ll feel the piercing cold, like ice cream, straight up through your brain, but you want to eat it anyway. Or, you can just look away and get lost in the beautifully arranged words like flowers in a vase.

Excellent book!
This is an unforgettable book. The personal story told by a 15 year old girl is very disturbing, I guess as same as the political and economical situation in the country. The multi-faceted characters are very complex with their ambiguities, so it is not easy to like or totally dislike any of the main characters. The author provokes you to think about the book even after you finish the last page.

Such a profound story
I felt every second of this story. Chimamanda put me into each scenery in a way I felt emotions no other book could ever make me do before. This book deserves a movie.
