À propos de cet audio
Hailed as Britain's Queen of Crime, Val McDermid's award-winning, internationally best-selling novels have captivated readers and listeners for more than 30 years. Now, in 1979, she returns to the past with the story of Allie Burns, an investigative journalist whose stories lead her into world a corruption, terror, and murder.
The year started badly and only got worse - blizzards, strikes, power cuts, and political unrest were the norm. For journalist Allie Burns, however, someone else's bad news was the unmistakable sound of opportunity knocking, and the year is ripe with possibilities. But Allie is a woman in a man's world. Desperate to get away from the "women's stories" the Glasgow desk keeps assigning her, she strikes up an alliance with wannabe investigative journalist Danny Sullivan. From the start, their stories create enemies. First an international tax fraud, then a potential Scottish terrorist group aiming to cause mayhem ahead of the impending devolution referendum. And then Danny is found murdered in his flat. For Allie, investigative journalism just got personal.
The first novel in McDermid's newest series, 1979 is an atmospheric journey into the past with intriguing insight into the present, and the latest addition to McDermid's crime pantheon.

The narration and Scottish venacular
Slow start to this story but it surely got rocking. I love Val McDermid and her writing style. I just couldn’t stop listening to this story. Can’t wait to read book 2.

Why the long pauses in the narration?
An enjoyable novel, and the reader is very good, except — she keeps inserting long pauses between passages of dialogue. No reason in the world for the pauses. It’s disconcerting.

Allie Burns is a keeper
Took me a bit to get used to the cadences of Katie Leung’s narration but it was worth it. Great writing about writing by Val McDermid. I will follow this new series for sure.

Fabulous book but…
I loved the story, narration, characters. But in the title review, the very end of the MYSTERY is given away. It needs a spoiler-alert.

Good
I am a long standing McDermid fan. I have enjoyed at least 90% of her writing. However, this series, to me, is lacking in 'grab you' essence. Compared to her earlier novels I find this a bit slow and a tad tedious. Seems to be taking a long time to get to the main plot with a lot of lead up to what I assume will happen. I will stick with it hoping it will pick up with intrigue the further I listen.

Spoiler Alert!
Why in the name of all that’s holy would the publisher’s blurb for this title reveal that Danny gets murdered? The audio is just over 11 hours long. I’ve got about 4 hours left and he is still with us. Every time the scene changes I expect Allie to discover his body! This is a ridiculous flaw in the advertising.
That, along with plot points that drop out of nowhere and Leung’s repetitive cadence, which makes every sentence identical, are combining for a less-than-enjoyable listening experience.
Definitely not up to the standard I expect from McDermid.
