A good story overall, but I expected it to be about witches like Morgan’s other three books—especially given the title. I liked it but didn’t find it as engaging as her three witch books.

The story was engaging. I would have liked more—years spread out of the granddaughters” lives. The narration was amazing most of the time—but sometimes seemed unnecessarily dramatic on occasion. Still, all in all a 5.

The Knight's Tale of medieval wars and chivalry is the first tale told to the pilgrims as they set out to Canterbury. It concerns Theseus, returning from fighting at Thebes, and two brother knights Palamon and Arcite, imprisoned but yearning for their loves. But the real hero of this recording is Richard Bebb who, with the help of Professor Derek Brewer, the leading expert on Chaucerian pronunciation, make the original Middle English not only comprehensible to the modern ear, but exciting.

I am thankful that such a fine reading in the original Middle English is available. Why do people assume that translations are the preference? Many scholars and students still prefer the original language to learn Middle English and to appreciate the sound and rhythm of the poetry. To me, this recording is a rare diamond hidden amidst the myriad translations—or perhaps I should say the wheat amidst the chaff.

Though listening to the audiobook proved challenging given the details of the case, I was riveted throughout the book. The exhaustive research is impressive and extraordinary—and I was moved to know that all findings and materials have been donated. I listened to the Diary of Anne Frank before listening to this book; I’m also watching A Small Light. So all these aspects together form a moving and haunting story from recent history.

Though many aspects of the plot annoyed me—not the least of which was why anyone would construct a cabin with a door that could not be opened from the inside—I found the lingering questions of psychological damage and effect interesting. The narrator for the audiobook has a pleasant voice.
