Histoire
Every day without fail, Travis Devine puts on a cheap suit, grabs his faux-leather briefcase, and boards the 6:20 commuter train to Manhattan, where he works as an entry-level analyst at the city’s most prestigious investment firm. In the mornings, he gazes out the train window at the lavish homes of the uberwealthy, dreaming about joining their ranks. In the evenings, he listens to the fiscal news on his phone, already preparing for the next grueling day in the cutthroat realm of finance. Then one morning Devine’s tedious routine is shattered by an anonymous email: She is dead.

Scary to think this is actually really happening.

I always learn something from Baldachi's writings. His stories are always good, and in this case the premise is very frightening.

It is 1486 and Venice is a wealthy, opulent center for trade. Orsola Rosso is the eldest daughter in a family of glassblowers on Murano, the island revered for the craft. As a woman, she is not meant to work with glass—but she has the hands for it, the heart, and a vision. When her father dies, she teaches herself to make glass beads in secret, and her work supports the Rosso family fortunes.

Almost like being there

Being a glass beadmaker I was impressed by the detail the author put into her book about making rudimentary beads in earlier times; of course techniques have changed, as the book defines, and there are some truly incredible beads to be found now. Small sculptures too.
I enjoyed the presentation and listened to it while on my torch, (sans bellows).
It made me feel less alone while I worked.
The story line is interesting and the characters likewise. To hear confirmed the very slow acceptance of women into glassmaking made it extra special for me, being one.
The streets and canal names, and the now defunct factories, were also familiar. There are so few left and, as told, the lousy Chinese pieces are being imported and sold on Murano. One must look with a very discerning and knowledgable eye to see the very important differences.
I pray Venice and Murano get returned families now that daily foot traffic for tourists is being limited. It was getting out of hand. So much so one could not go grocery shopping nor step out of ones home door, because of the overcrowded masses.
Although the Flood & Covid were damaging to the area and the makers, moreso has been the prices of gas for the furnaces because of the Russian war and restrictions. Taxes are massive for the glass factories and the rules for getting apprenticeships are nearly impossible to follow. The Italian Government, and its overlaying corruption, does not think beyond the immediate revenue tourism brings in; hence the reluctance of family members to follow suit these past generations. I am very glad this author covered so many important political hurdles the glassmakers of Murano and Venice must face. Sadly, they are a dying breed.

Histoire
Two teens appear out of nowhere, ransacking a small-town grocery and attacking the police officers who come to investigate. Their clothes are torn and filthy, their hands and bare feet callused, they have fangs. They’re sister and brother, alone against the world. Where did they come from? Raised by wolves, they say. Kai and Holo are taken in by the police chief and his wife, and begin adjusting to life in a small town, attending school and going on dates. But humans, they find, are the most vicious animals. And the mystery of their upbringing brings dark and powerful forces to Kokanee Creek.

Misunderstood and misjudged. The full gambit for angst and frustration built by small town single mindedness. Well performed and entertaining.

I appreciate the effort this author went to to produce an informative book for people who need to organize and simplify their lives. The author had some interesting ideas and methods, and I say brava to her for making her life and the footprint of her family much more environmentally and exconomically responsible.
The addition of frugal recipes is a nice idea, but it was painful to of them, and their directions. This would clealy be better in print.
As well I dont think 'AI Reading Programs' are yet advanced enough to the point where it can aptly follow the nuiances of a constructed sentence beyond the very basics. As such, mispronounciations are throughout the audio version of this book.
In all, an admiral effort, but would be best in print only.

Thos book is another excellent example of Follet's continuing historical novels of the lives of peoples on all sides of WWII.
Each time I read, or listen to, a Ken Fillet novel I am informed and learn so much. His focus on WWII is enlightening and thoroughly researched. So much so it lays out the various positions; putting the whole debacle into perspective. What I knew from family recollections and diaries is further detailed and substantiated in Follet's writing. My knowlege has been expanded, and I better understand who were involved and why.
I have further learned the Comunist and Socialist differences, and the beliefs of their respective followers. The attraction to Socialism I can easily understand, but communism has been so deeply corrupted through Facism and Dictatorships that it is far and beyond its original intent; feloneously surpassing the Monarchy it replaced, and thus its original design.
I truly hope the worlds youth, and nay-sayers of history, read these accounts and realize, although some of the book's characters are fictitious, the majority, their situations, and the attrocities were very real. These things did happen and we sorely need to learn from them. We need to learn that ordinary peace loving people can be manipulated into following evil, and in turn inflict heinous acts upon their fellow humans.
Thank you Mr. Follet and your team for doing an excellent job laying out the political influences , their ramifications of these events so we can learn, understand, and hopefully never, ever repeat them. This is such important information.

Histoire
Bill Bryson and his family live in a Victorian parsonage in a part of England where nothing of any great significance has happened since the Romans decamped. Yet one day, he began to consider how very little he knew about the ordinary things of life as he found it in that comfortable home. To remedy this, he formed the idea of journeying about his house from room to room to “write a history of the world without leaving home.”

Who knew all this stuff? And to understand that the romantic Victorian era wasn't as we dream ot was, is a revelation for which I am most grateful to learn. Bryson's books always leave me impressed and better in the know. What a great way to learn. These all should be part of every secondary school curriculum.

Janice Peacock knows of which she speaks when she describes the soft glass lampworking process, giving the reader insight to a wonderful and addictive craft.
Peacock's characters are well thought out and for the most part polite. This is something your teenager and your mother can enjoy. Not too spicy, the entertainment value has legs and Peacock takes you to it.
Peacock has written four books in the series and I understand a new book is looming. Brava Janice.

Brutally frank but buoyed throughout by McLeod’s unquenchable spirit, Peyakow - a title borrowed from the Cree word for “one who walks alone” - is an inspiring account of triumph against unimaginable odds. McLeod’s perspective as someone whose career path has crossed both sides of the Indigenous/White chasm resonates with particular force in today’s Canada.

The excessive bureaucracy this man and the First Nations peoples have had to face is really unbelievable. I am so glad for this book and the education it has given me. I think all Canadians should listen to it.
I know the Governmental departments do not communicate or play well with each other, and their individual egos seem to get in the way of rightful progress; but at the expense of the first people? Absolutely shameless.
I applaud this writing for its clarity and details. From two sides of the equation, Peyakow tells us the ins and outs of both, and even confesses when the side in need gets in their own way. But honestly all people, need to GET THE LEAD OUT !!!!

With the Beatles, John Lennon surpasses his youthful dreams, achieving a level of superstardom that defies classification. “We were the best bloody band there was,” he says. “There was nobody to touch us.” Nobody except the original nowhere man, Mark David Chapman. Chapman once worshipped his idols from afar - but now harbors grudges against those, like Lennon, whom he feels betrayed him. He’s convinced Lennon has misled fans with his message of hope and peace. And Chapman’s not staying away any longer.

Évalué le: 2022-11-27
it is very nice to receive and read researched and first hand accounting of the Beatles beginning and rise to fame, yet still at such young ages. To learn where they went and what took them there. Clearing up and putting to rest the rumours of their eventual breakup without the demonisation of anyone. And the tragic end of John Lennon's life, put forth by a twisted and sick individual.
the characterisation of the parties involved made me feel a part of their success and their losses. It made me wonder how many interviews were done to fill in the blanks. And how many tireless hours of rechecks and rewrites were needed to keep this story honest, accurate and on track.
Thanks, as well, to the artful reading of this engrossing book.
