Histoire
For almost four desperate years between 1939 and 1943, British and American navies fought a savage, losing battle against German submarine wolf packs. The Allies might never have turned the tide of that historic battle without an intelligence coup. The race to break the German U-boat codes is one of the last great untold stories of World War II.

I have wanted to know more about Enigma and cracking the codes during WWII, but this book was not what I expected. Like most things, there is a lot more to the story than appears at first glance! I expected for the focus to be in Bletchley Park, where all the codebreakers were… instead, it was mostly set at sea, aboard ships and submarines. It was through these battles that the Allies were able to literally seize an Enigma machine, and ultimately all the related devices and keys needed to operate them. It went beyond equipment, as they tried to turn up code books and important papers in office quarters, and even the pockets of newly captured prisoners of war. This was all the stuff Bletchley needed to do their work. As a result, there was more about battles than usually interests me, so my wind would wander, and I missed some details. The narration wasn’t terrible, but I wish it had kept my attention more. Plenty of detail here for those who want to understand the actual devices and codes.

I really liked this book. It’s the second William Shirer book I’ve read, but this one was unique, as it really was his diary from his time in Berlin as a journalist, in the period leading up to WWII, until early 1940. What makes it remarkable is that it’s his experiences, and reactions, on a day to day basis, as things unfolded, without the benefit of hindsight. This made it very compelling. Highly recommended.

Histoire
In 1508, despite strong advice to the contrary, the powerful Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo Buonarroti to paint the ceiling of the newly restored Sistine Chapel in Rome. During the four extraordinary years that Michelangelo spent laboring over the ceiling, power politics and personal rivalries swirled around him. He battled ill health, financial and family difficulties, inadequate knowledge of the art of fresco, and the Pope's impatience - a history that is more compelling than most novels.

A very thorough examination and timeline of the creation of the frescos on the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling. Lots of details on the techniques involved. Does a great job of putting Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael in historical context… I better understand the relationship (or lack thereof) between these three artists now as a result. Very well narrated, kept my interest. Highly recommended.

When Roxana Robinson’s definitive biography of O’Keeffe was first published in 1989, it received rave reviews and was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. This new edition features a new foreword by the author, setting O’Keefe in an artistic context over the last thirty years since the book was first published, as well as previously unpublished letters of the young O’Keeffe to her lover, Arthur MacMahon. This book also relates the story of Robinson’s own encounter with the artist.

What an absolutely fantastic biography! Perhaps the best biography of an artist that I have ever read (listened to). I feel like I understand Georgia O’Keeffe rather well, how her brain worked, her philosophy and values, how she thought about things. She was one of those rare people who had no desire to change other people, so this was really special to listen to. I also came to appreciate her love of New Mexico and the big open spaces. I was looking of pictures of her two homes there (as well as her art) while I listened, and it added a lot of richness to the experience. Her art is magnificent and she was a real trailblazer highly recommended.

In February 1969, the Beatles began working on what became their final album together. Abbey Road introduced a number of new techniques and technologies to the Beatles' sound and included "Come Together", "Something", and "Here Comes the Sun", which all emerged as classics. Womack's colorful retelling of how this landmark album was written and recorded is a treat for fans of the Beatles. Solid State takes listeners back to 1969 and into EMI's Abbey Road Studios, which boasted an advanced solid state transistor mixing desk.

This was absolutely fantastic! I did find the first part a bit slow going, and you’ll feel the same if you have read of Beatles history, but when it got to the point where they started recording Abbey Road, it definitely picked up. Loaded with details on all of the tracks, the musicians and technicians who worked on it, and, of course the band members themselves, and all the turmoil. I put on my headphones and listened to the entire album afterwards. Pure gold.

Punk rock and hip-hop, disco and salsa, the loft jazz scene and the downtown composers known as Minimalists—in the mid-1970s, New York City was a laboratory where all the major styles of modern music were reinvented, all at once, from one block to the next, by musicians who knew, admired, and borrowed from one another.

This book takes you to the roots of rock ‘n roll in the 70’s in New York. Meet the musicians who are icons today, but were just part of the crowd of the many who made up the scene. How certain artists came together to form the bands, and records the albums, that my siblings would listen to, and eventually I would too. The alchemy that resulted in those that rose to the top is fascinating. Lots of drugs, NYC lore, a great listen.

I listened to Anna Karenina with my bookclub, which covered the book over 8 sessions, one for each part of the book. I found that the audio was recorded in alignment with the 8 parts of the physical book, so it made Audible a good option.
I have heard it said that Anna Karenina is the best book of fiction ever written… and I think that may be true. I really enjoy Tolstoy’s writing and found all the characters rich and multi dimensional. And memorable. You do not read Anna Karenina and forget it.

October 24th, 2023 will mark 20 years since Concorde disappeared from our skies. Yet still Mike Bannister, the last Concorde Chief Pilot, faces the same questions. Concorde is an enthralling personal account of what it takes to fly planes faster than the speed of sound, and of the events that lay behind 114 needless deaths—the 113 victims of the crash and, ultimately, Concorde herself.

I have always had a lot of questions about why Concorde never flew again. For the most part, this book answered these, and more. For the remaining questions, the answers were probably here, they just got past me. Aviation geeks will really appreciate this. There could be no better author for this book than Mike, as he flew her more than any other pilot and was involved in the crash investigation. Definitely recommended.

There are lots of theories about the time Agatha Christie went “missing” for a period of time. This book explores them and provides a reasonable explanation, along with a good discussion on her life. Interesting listening if you like her books.

Conceived nearly a century ago by a man who died believing himself a failure, it's now a revered classic and a rite of passage in the reading lives of millions. But how well do we really know The Great Gatsby? As Maureen Corrigan, Gatsby lover extraordinaire, points out, while Fitzgerald's masterpiece may be one of the most popular novels in America, many of us first read it when we were too young to fully comprehend its power.

What a great book. Everything you wanted to know about The Great Gatsby, written by a professor who teaches on the subject… but her book is far from dry. Her enthusiasm and love for this book come through in her narration (splendidly done). I also read The Gatsby Affair, by Kendall Taylor, which was more biographical about both Scott and Zelda. Both were good, but So We Read On was more fun to listen to.
