Histoire
As one-fifth of the iconic Spice Girls and judge on X Factor and America's Got Talent, Melanie Brown, aka Scary Spice, has been an international star since the age of 19. And yet there are sides of Mel that no one has ever seen, or really known. Brutally Honest is an exposé of the struggles and acute pain that lay behind the glamour and success. With deep personal insight, remarkable frankness and Melanie’s trademark Yorkshire humour, this audiobook removes the mask of fame and reveals the mother, wife and daughter behind the Spice Girl everyone thinks they know.

Heavy yet empowering
Évalué le: 2024-02-13
I had to keep stepping away from this book. It was a heavy read and found it hard not to have the content ruminating in my brain sometimes. However, I feel it is an important read to get a butter understanding of the experiences of women in abusive relationships. Even the almighty Scary Spice was slowly overtaken by narcissistic men. She is human. She is also strong and managed to get through it utilizing her social connections, gaining strength from her father’s passing, and he children as her rock. She is brutally honest about her experience in hopes to validate the experiences of other people living through abuse as she had. This book is not for the faint of heart. I’m so happy to have engaged in this content. The book does jump around a lot, but it a complete reflection of Mel B’s fast paced brain.

Histoire
Dame Sue Black is an internationally renowned forensic anthropologist and human anatomist. She has lived her life eye to eye with the Grim Reaper, and she writes vividly about it in this book, which is part primer on the basics of identifying human remains, part frank memoir of a woman whose first paying job as a schoolgirl was to apprentice in a butcher shop, and part no-nonsense but deeply humane introduction to the reality of death in our lives. It is a treat for CSI junkies, murder mystery and thriller fans, and anyone seeking a clear-eyed guide to a subject that touches us all.

I’m Blown Away
Évalué le: 2023-08-04
I just so happen to be finishing this the same day Buffy has announced retiring from live performances/touring. I am gutted. However, this book has allowed me to have a fuller understanding of the impact Buffy has made on this world. She is the ultimate bad ass. Thank you Buffy for everything. This book was well written and thoughtful. I appreciate the details on how Buffy performs and the musical decisions she makes. I feel this book was incredibly respectful of very personal sensitive information and delivered in a way that allows us to fully be impacted by the content and to really care. The audiobook performance was great, I was engaged in the content from start to finish. Well done! #carryiton

New York Times best-selling poet and multiplatinum singer-songwriter Jewel explores her unconventional upbringing and extraordinary life in an inspirational memoir that covers her childhood, rise to fame, marriage, and motherhood. She writes beautifully about growing up amid the natural wonders of Alaska, about pain and childhood trauma, and about discovering her own identity years after the entire world had discovered the beauty of her songs.

Heartbreaking and heartwarming
Évalué le: 2023-03-17
This was recommended to me by a close friend who I sing with and who covers a lot of Jewel’s songs. WOW! Just wow! I had no idea Jewel went through so much. This is why I love memoirs. The heartbreak she endured over the years and all the moments of human connection helping her through the mud. I can’t even imagine. Thank you Jewel for this glimpse into your life. I love that she narrated the audio book. I could really hear the emotion in her voice and she told her life story. What an incredible experience to have listened to this.

I loved this audiobook. The narrator did a fantastic job portraying the different characters and really gave life to the internal monologue of Joe. I highly recommend this book. I would 100% go back and listen again.

Histoire
A down-to-earth global pop star. A deeply spiritual, cerebral powerhouse. A famously outspoken introvert. For her millions of fans, and the few unacquainted, defining rock luminary Alanis Morissette is an exercise in dichotomies and nuance. And though her most formidable traits are seemingly at odds with one another, they are, oddly enough, completely emblematic of all of us: complex, conflicting, and, most importantly, ever evolving. With her striking command of language and profound emotional fluency, the 46-year-old covers an enormous amount of personal ground with listeners.

I’m Here, to say we need more
Évalué le: 2020-10-26
This was such a cool thing to listen to. I loved hearing Alanis talk about her past, her current thoughts about life, music, systemic issues within the music business, and her meeting her partner. I also really enjoyed her performances. I wish it was 10 hours longer but I’m not complaining about what we did get. I’m so happy she’s performed Smiling, my favourite song from her newest record, Such Pretty Forks In The Road.

Histoire
Saul Indian Horse is in critical condition. Sitting feeble in an alcoholism treatment facility, he is told that sharing his story will help relieve his agony. Though skeptical, he embarks on a heartbreaking journey from the present - and into the woods of Northern Ontario, where his life began in a snowy Ojibway camp. The tale that follows is one of great pain and great determination from Richard Wagamese, an author who "never seems to waste a shot" ( New York Times).

Enjoyed it more than I thought I would
Évalué le: 2020-01-11
Excellent book, excellent performance by the narrator, and surprisingly more interesting than I thought it would be. I was very invested in what was going on. I really felt for this main person and found myself getting so angry by how he was treated. I thank the author for sharing his story.

Histoire
In Evicted, Princeton sociologist and MacArthur “Genius” Matthew Desmond follows eight families in Milwaukee as they each struggle to keep a roof over their heads. Hailed as “wrenching and revelatory” (The Nation), “vivid and unsettling” (New York Review of Books), Evicted transforms our understanding of poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving one of twenty-first-century America’s most devastating problems. Its unforgettable scenes of hope and loss remind us of the centrality of home, without which nothing else is possible.

Fantastic and educational
Évalué le: 2018-12-14
Sociology nerds would love this. I learned so much and I work within a youth shelter. It just might be my favourite books. It is filled with facts and academic information, however it reads like a novel. The ethnographic research behind this book really brings to light the true experiences of the people struggling through poverty and eviction. An excellent body of work that I continue to go back to. My favourite chapter is titled, Lobster on food stamps. This entry speaks volumes.
