Story was good, but the plot developed with so much dialogue that it got boring and I also got characters mixed up a lot. I prefer a quicker pace in activity. I did enjoy the main character, and the narration was excellent.

Nicely paced with action, and not too high stakes so that you can listen to it recreationally while working or driving or otherwise engaged in something else. Engaging narrator and terrific plot too.

Histoire
One day a shell lands in a bread line and kills 22 people as the cellist watches from a window in his flat. He vows to sit in the hollow where the mortar fell and play Albinoni’s Adagio once a day for each of the 22 victims. The Adagio had been re-created from a fragment after the only extant score was firebombed in the Dresden Music Library, but the fact that it had been rebuilt by a different composer into something new and worthwhile gives the cellist hope.

It took me a bit to understand where it’s going, but once I did, I really appreciated the story. It’s so well written and I loved how it emphasized the humanity of people living in war by showing the impact of art on their spirit.

Histoire
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon.

Confusing, excessive and was a slog to get through. I wanted to quit throughout. I do love the author’s other book The Blacktongue Thief, and consider that one of the best books I’ve read.

It’s not action packed but it’s a perfect read for the car or while at work. There’s enough twists and turns to keep it interesting but slow enough pace you can manage other things too. I’m reading this series faster than most, as a result. Narration is excellent too!
