Histoire
Anna has a life to envy. An apartment in New York. A well-meaning (too well-meaning?) partner. And a high-flying job in beauty PR. Who wouldn't want all that? Anna—it turns out. Turning a minor mid-life crisis into a major life event she packs it in, heads back to Ireland, and gets a PR job for a super-high-end coastal retreat. Tougher than it sounds. Newsflash: the locals hate it. So much so, there have been threats—and violence.

Long and rambling
Évalué le: 2024-10-13
This could have been half the length. I remember reading some Marian Keyes books and enjoying them but this one had me skipping ahead frequently and felt like it introduced so many storylines and characters that weren’t necessary. I thought narrator was ok, but was definitely not as good as professional narrators.

Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra. Which is how Daphne begins her new story.

Story started as a 4 but ended as a 2
Évalué le: 2024-05-02
I was looking for something fun, so was happy to read this. I liked the initial story and the characters. I was surprised how quickly Miles transformed into male heartthrob from initial description of him. The romance seemed to come too quickly and then the drama/conflict seemed artificial and juvenile. I was having fun listening at the beginning but by the end I found many of the characters whiny and annoying.

Intelligent look at relationships in your twenties
Évalué le: 2024-03-10
I think this is a great look at surviving your twenties and all the loneliness, desperation and bad mistakes that accompany it. It was definitely elevated above your standard "chicklit" with intelligent story, dialogue and meaning, but at the same time, it was very readable.

It is an ordinary Monday and harried London literary agent Emma is flying out of the door as usual. Preoccupied with work and her ever growing to-do list, she fails to notice her lovely husband Dan seems bereft, her son can barely meet her eye, and her daughter won’t go near her. Even the dog seems sad.

I really liked this. I found it thought provoking and easy to listen to. I was getting annoyed at times with the repetition but understand why that device was used.

Started well but became increasingly annoying
Évalué le: 2024-03-10
I was really enjoying this book when I started it. I liked the references to Coronado Island and Vietnam. I didn't mind all the bad choices in the second half as it was a hard path coming back from Vietnam but the focus on men was nauseating and disappointing. It could have been a terrific book that focused more on sisterhood and personal growth but decided to make the main character constantly looking for a man.

Fun story, average narration
Évalué le: 2024-03-10
The story was fun. I found the narration a bit annoying. I find the stereotyping of "rich people voices" to be a bit silly and implausible but the story was pretty good.

Silly Story, Ridiculous Narration
Évalué le: 2024-03-10
I had read this author before so knew that it would be unrealistic and escapist. That said, I found the narration so ridiculous and dialogue so implausible that I kept skipping ahead. The ending was predictable one third of the way through the book. It felt like an over acted 1980s soap opera.

Histoire
Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college—they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now—for reasons they’re still not discussing—they don’t. They broke up five months ago. And still haven’t told their best friends. Which is how they find themselves sharing a bedroom at the Maine cottage that has been their friend group’s yearly getaway for the last decade.

Disappointing story and performance
Évalué le: 2023-05-04
I’ve listened to Emily Henry and loads of Julia Whelan but this was disappointing. I felt like the characters’ conflicts would be better suited in a YA book. Likewise I found a couple voices cutesy and childish. I was really excited about having a good author plus good narrator but am now struggling to finish.
