An improvement on the first entry
Évalué le: 2024-11-15
I found that this book really took lots of what was set up in the first book and ran with it in a really fun and delightful way. The world building was fascinating and the action continued to be thrill-a-minute shonen nonsense in the best way possible.

Good bordering great
Évalué le: 2024-11-15
I really wanted to enjoy this entry in the series more than I did. I think my issues stemmed from pacing, which got pretty wonky with all the dungeons. That said, there were some really great character moments, and many of the encounters were both intense and fun to listen to.
It was almost like there was just a bit too much, like you've overeaten and you're not sick but you wish you could undo your belt to just give it room to breathe. Of course, there's an obvious impending threat in the book, so there's not really time to do that.
Still, if you enjoyed the previous entries, this one really is a must-read, with lots of things coming to a head in a very exciting way. The narrator continued to have a solid performance, as well.

Histoire
Having survived his first year at Faebrook, all Rowan wants is to continue adventuring, learn more magic, and perhaps enjoy a nice apple pie every now and then. Instead, he is swept into the political turmoil that seems to follow Morgana everywhere she goes. With assassins lurking in the shadows, dungeon dives growing ever more dangerous, and rumors of dark deeds going unpunished in the Fae homeland, it will take all of Rowan's ability just to survive.

An exciting sequel worth the credit
Évalué le: 2024-11-12
The author succeeded in making a sequel that I think prevailed over the original in all ways that matter. The story was sharper, more directed. Our plucky hero has some real interpersonal drama. And when things go wrong, they go wrong spectacularly! Big fan of the direction and I'm on tenterhooks for book 3!
The narrator was also very good, with a variety of voices and accents that help shape the story.
I had some minor pacing issues that are more likely about my preference than the author's ability, but other than that, a very solid fantasy romp.

With the newly hatched Nishari at his side, it is finally time for Hump to face his fate in Drakalyn, home of the wolf dragons, but to get there he must venture through the Fallen Lands—a realm lost to dungeons and monsters. Only, time is not on his side. The Book of Infinite Pages has awoken, and if Hump fails to master his manifested soul, others will seek to claim it. Even in these distant lands, a new danger approaches, and it seeks the blood of a goddess. The Dragon Keepers are all that stand between Celaine's people and death. The White Flame must blaze again.

Strong addition to the genre

Look, the Hedge Wizard as a series hits my personal perfect blend of litrpg/pure fantasy. I felt there were one or two small hiccups in pacing, but I think overall the book was very interesting and added a lot of context while answering a lot of questions and foreshadowing for what lies ahead. The narrator continues to be solid as well, with a steady and well-rounded stable of voices and accents.

Salvatore's worst nightmare is taking on a demon, but if he wants to stay at Quest Academy, how will he prove to himself and everyone else that he can succeed? He's going to have to take on an entire floor of a demonic tower before the first semester comes to a close. That's the least of Sal's problems as he navigates through his first student mission away from the school. Sal is more comfortable at the crafting table, but he needs to survive in a reclaimed zone outside of the academy with the worst team of misfits you could possibly imagine.

A strong sequel
Évalué le: 2024-08-22
I found this book much stronger than the first book, with characters and motivations much more fleshed out and developed. I am excited for book 3.
Minor issues with all men having the exact same jarring laugh. Additionally, the pacing was a little weird and the climax was a little lackluster compared to what I was expecting. Minor complaints though, in light of how much more engaged with characters and the world I was.

Hiral is the Everfail, the weakest person on the flying island of Fallen Reach. He trains harder than any warrior. Studies longer than any scholar. But all his people are born with magic powered by the sun, flowing through tattoos on their bodies. Despite having enormous energy within, Hiral is the only one who can’t channel it; his hard work is worth nothing. Until it isn’t. In a moment of danger, Hiral unlocks an achievement with a special instruction: Access a Dungeon to receive a Class-Specific Reward.

Fun gamelit popcorn
Évalué le: 2024-07-22
I enjoyed this book, and thought the progression fantasy was well served. I had a few hiccups with the pacing where I felt that the author could have trusted us to understand some things with less outright explanation, but I also had a few moments where I thought 'this is the most ridiculous anime fight scene and I am *here* for it'. It managed to keep things moving and the tension high. Definitely leans into the gamelit with explicit stats and cooldown, but fun progression fantasy where even without those moments you can feel Hiral getting stronger.

With a knife in his gut, Rowan figured he was destined to become just another corpse littering the slums of Taureen. So he was fairly surprised to wake up in the back of a moving wagon with a couple of adventurers. Turns out that Rowan had been given something most street rats can only dream of—a second chance.

A solid fantasy romp with a few pacing issues
Évalué le: 2024-03-09
I don't think I've ever been so frustrated by a book I enjoyed. While the story is solid and actually has a few points I really truly love, the pacing was off for me. The way that the protagonist basically refuses to interact with other people was tiring, and really dragged out the slow parts. The final third of the book where things really started getting interesting should have arrived earlier.
Also, it feels like the author didn't trust the reader to remember information - I found there was a lot of repetition for things we'd seen several times, which felt like it cut into progress.
That said, I really enjoyed the journey and now that Things Are Afoot, I'm very excited to get the sequel. The narrator also did a wonderful job.

Histoire
Reidon Ward's first semester at the Galens Institute hasn't been without reward. In just over half a year he's gone from the weakest cadet at school to one of the strongest in his class, and there's no one left who would argue that his Device, Shido, isn't the most terrifying CAD they've ever laid eyes on. Still, Rei knows that his climb has barely begun, like he knows that the true fight is only just starting. After all… The Sectionals tournament has arrived. Rei, along with Aria, Viv, Catcher, and a couple unexpected squadmates, are about to face the first real battle of their careers.

A much more interesting follow-up
Évalué le: 2024-02-16
This sequel has a lot more going on in terms of plot development. We have shadowy background figures, we have concerned families, we have more crazy fights. There's a tournament arc, and who doesn't love a tournament arc? The narrator did really well with keeping voices distinct, although I thought some characters were uh, a little pirate-y. I'm not mad, I just wasn't ready.
I think we see a lot of growth in a lot of characters, which is great, but personally I found Viv to be increasingly tedious as the story progressed. Like, honestly, she makes every situation she's in worse by intentionally being vague and wishy-washy. Like, girl, you're being prepared for war, learn to communicate.
I'm really looking forward to the next book! Would listen to again.

Another step on the journey
Évalué le: 2023-12-20
Off the hop, you can tell that book 3 and book 4 were probably once the same book, since when characters appear we get very little in the way of introductions. Fine for fans, bad place to start for newcomers (but who starts on book 4 anyway?) That said, the narrator continues to do excellent work and should be proud of what they've done. Wonderful voice work, lots of variety, easy to distinguish. As for the story, well, it's pretty good. There were some revelations and developments in this book I'm excited to see the outcome of, but it was very focused on Alex's training to the detriment of everything else. I felt we lost out on more interesting interactions with the deep dive into his methods of training and the finer points of magic. Those things have their own charm, and I never stopped listening, but I really hope the next book eases off a little. Still, looking forward to more!

Hump and his companions return to Sheercliff City to find a region plagued by monsters—bad news for most, but for a hedge wizard, it's just good business. With the gorger dead and the bond with his unhatched dragon growing quickly, Hump looked forward to some ordinary adventures. Yet trouble finds him as the Inquisition arrives, accusing him of his master's murder. It seems there is more to the old man's death than he believed.

Excellent followup
Évalué le: 2023-11-19
I really enjoyed this new entry. I thought the story really built well on stuff from both the first and second books. It was nice to see the party grow and mature, even if (or perhaps because) everything is coming down around them. I like that there were resolutions to other plot points than open up the world and mystery ahead.
