Histoire
In this absorbing and frequently contentious book, Roger Penrose puts forward his view that there are some facets of human thinking that can never be emulated by a machine. The book"s central concern is what philosophers call the "mind-body problem". Penrose examines what physics and mathematics can tell us about how the mind works, what they can"t, and what we need to know to understand the physical processes of consciousness.

this simply shouldn"t be an audiobook...

this is painful to listen to as math cannot and should not be expressed by voice in this way " vertical bar z angle bracket, vertical bar x angle bracket" etc it"s impossible to get anything out of it. they should instead references the PDF for any equations, which for some reason I"m failing to find...

In our lifetimes, the future has never been so up for grabs. The New Possible offers 28 unique visions of what can be, if instead of choosing to go back to normal, we choose to go forward to something far better. Assembled from global leaders on six continents, these essays are not simply speculation. They are an inspiration and a roadmap for action.

Decent message but shallow and repetitive exploration

I guess I should"ve known that a group of essays of this type would be a bunch of people saying similar things with a lack of depth. I agree that we need to move to commons and fundamentally transform our system but I find these kinds of collections tend to saturate the message without providing the depth required and ends up destroying terms (as we see sustainability being overused and thus looses it"s meaning)
it was simultaneously too organized and not organized in the sense that there was too much overlap and repetition between essay. Maybe I"m just coming to this book after hearing about this parallel between the pandemic and climate crisis, but I didn"t feel that they went far enough. Maybe I"m not the target audience, and atleast I get a list of organizations to look into, but I fear that solutions raised in this way isn"t helpful.
also the audiobook would"ve been much better if each author read their essay. as the audio performance was very monotone ,prescriptive and lacking emphasis.

The Story Grid is a tool developed by editor Shawn Coyne to analyze stories and provide helpful editorial comments. It"s like a CT Scan that takes a photo of the global story and tells the editor or writer what is working, what is not, and what must be done to make what works better and fix what"s not. The Story Grid breaks down the component parts of stories to identify the problems. And finding the problems in a story is almost as difficult as the writing of the story itself (maybe even more difficult).

Great information to learn but poorly executed
Évalué le: 2023-06-06
I enjoyed the information, a useful framework, but for a story about editing they ironically did a poor job editing the voice. moreover the narrator mumbles/ slurs certain words. not typically of audibles standard.

In a time of social and ecological crisis, what can we as individuals do to make the world a better place? This inspirational and thought-provoking book serves as an empowering antidote to the cynicism, frustration, paralysis, and overwhelm so many of us are feeling, replacing it with a grounding reminder of what’s true: we are all connected, and our small, personal choices bear unsuspected transformational power.

A guide to humility and wisdom of "Right Action"
Évalué le: 2022-01-22
there always seems to be a counter intuitive response to many of our actions and understanding in the world. this book gives clarity to a new way of thinking and relating to the world which has the humility to not fall into the trap of naiive activism and focuses our attention on the true potential of our actions and how powerful the smallest actions can be. often the grand actions appear to be that which we should focus on, and we then become blind to the side affects of embodying that story.
and really guides towards what i see as the buddhist notion of Right Action

Sacred Economics traces the history of money from ancient gift economies to modern capitalism, revealing how the money system has contributed to alienation, competition, and scarcity; destroyed community; and necessitated endless growth. Today, these trends have reached their extreme - but in the wake of their collapse, we may find great opportunity to transition to a more connected, ecological, and sustainable way of being.

Epiphany inducing clarity and interconnection.
Évalué le: 2019-06-28
if you are familiar with Natural Law Resource Based Economy , The Zeitgeist Movement or similar movements, you will notice the parallels in philosophy and systems approach. I really appreciate the clarity in transitioning to a new economy, something that is sparsely talked about in the more intellectual activism circles.
it reminds me that to transition to a Spiral Dynamics Stage Green society (i.e. out of our individualistic material capitalism) we must allign ourselves with the philosophy of 2 stages of development above Green (turquoise)
