Wear OS 5: What’s New and What to Expect

Wear OS 5 previews

Wear OS 5 is right around the corner, as the smartwatch market continues to grow, with Wear OS devices seeing a notable 40% increase in their user base last year. Google recently introduced the first new Developer Preview, based on Wear OS 14, at their annual Google I/O event, in order to meet the rising demand and provide developers with a more capable platform. The full release of Wear OS 5 is slated for later this year, bringing several significant updates.

Focus on Power Efficiency in Wear OS 5

A key improvement that users have to look forward to is improved power efficiency. Google claims that devices running the new version with the same hardware will use 20% less battery than those running Wear OS 4 during active tasks like running. This is a substantial improvement, particularly for users who rely on their smartwatches for fitness tracking and other battery-intensive activities.

To complement this hardware efficiency, Google has released new guidelines to help developers create more power-efficient apps. This initiative aims to enhance overall battery life, making smartwatches more reliable for extended use.

Enhanced Health and Fitness Tracking

The Wear OS 5 beta introduces several advancements in health and fitness tracking, catering to the needs of health-conscious users. The update to Health Services includes support for new data types specifically for running, such as Ground Contact Time, Stride Length, Vertical Oscillation, and Vertical Ratio. These metrics provide runners with deeper insights into their performance, helping them optimize their training routines.

In addition, new Wear OS 5 features will include updates to Health Connect and Health Services, ensuring that users have access to comprehensive and accurate health data.

Updates to Watch Face Design

Google is also enhancing the tools available for creating watch faces with the latest updates to Watch Face Format. The new features include support for complications such as goal progress, weighted elements, and weather forecasts. Additionally, new configuration presets called Flavors will allow for more customization options.

Starting in early 2025, all new watch faces published on Google Play will need to be created using the Watch Face Format. This move is intended to ensure a consistent quality standard for watch faces available to Wear OS users.

Other New Features

Among the new features debuting is the addition of a gridstyle app drawer. While many other OEMs already had this, it’s nice to see Google listening to feedback and adding it natively.

There’s also several new APIs for developers of apps that use Tiles. These added APIs make it easier to resize, animate, and display key information to users.

Looking Forward

The upcoming new release of Wear OS represents a significant step forward for Google’s smartwatch platform. With improvements in power efficiency, advanced health tracking capabilities, and enhanced tools for watch face design, this and future betas aim to deliver a better overall experience for users.

As we approach the official release, developers and users alike can look forward to exploring these new features. Stay tuned for more updates on this new version and how it will impact the future of smartwatches, along with more news from Google I/O. For the latest news and insights, keep following Androidacy.
