Bought it as gift for my kid. After booting, the web ui forced me to upgrade software. Here things went really south. After “upgrade” onky thing that browser showed was “something went wrong. Please restart the vehicle”. That is it. Factory reset did not help. Returning.

The concept is pretty good. I just with pm would make it fully open where you can directly run anything on ros.

It's kind cool, but you need a lot of space and easy access to get to a track to be able to make use of it. Not recommended for those living in a big city. It takes A lot, of time to get anything interesting out of it. It probably takes a day to setup.

As of September 01 2024. Amazon has discontinued their virtual deepracer project. The support for the physical device sold here was always sparse at best. Raspberry pi has better support. Unfortunately the software technologies that this uses were new hypeware technologies at the time, but now 6 years later almost every layer of the ML stack has been abandoned by the software maintainer. This was probably true 2 years after release making it hard to maintain. So at this point it probably will only function a year or 2 into the future.

I bought this thing as part of a challenge through work. The rest of the engineering dept wanted to explore the AWS services and this seemed to be a fun way to do it.

The car is well assembled and while it is ugly, it is attractively ugly if you know what I mean.

The AWS services are really reasonable if you are a business, but hyper expensive if you are playing for fun. Just doing a training cycle (which takes all evening) cost you around $5 once you run out of free time which happens quickly.

I have hacked into the car and the Linix is pretty nice and the ROS engine it has is a fun way to learn these tools, but at the end of the day they are academic tools, not industrial tools for business systems. I am a professional vision engineer and a robotics engineer and have been for decades, and know what I am talking about. This is ideal for the student in either High school or College as it is a great platform to hack, mold and learn. It just isn't something that you can expect to get paid to know about unless you work for AWS. This is the reason that I give it three stars - it would be an academic 5 star product and a industrial no-star product in my book.

Get DeepRacer finally but it doesn't work

I got the DeepRacer today finally after waiting for about one year. Cannot wait to open the box and take a look. All the parts are included as the online video describes. There is a very obvious scratch on the shell. See attached photo. Seems like the packaging needs to be improved.
After charging the batteries, followed the online videos to assembly the car and connect it to WIFI successfully. But always got error "Vehicle battery not connected" when trying to calibrate it. Tried to disconnect/connect the battery and switch on/off it for a few times, but no luck. Don't know what is wrong with it.

Really disappointed after waiting for such a long time and getting a not-working product.

Pretty awesome that my 6yo son and I - neither of whom can code - could "teach a brain" in the cloud, "put it in the body" of the car and watch it move around on its in less than a week. Does anyone know where I can print different tracks out that could fit in 150 sq foot space? Have B&W printer, scotch tape, green paint, blue paint, garage floor & walls in need of a makeover. :-)
