From Wikisource

I tried to check out ur website, but found out that I can't read French! :p --Samuel 13:00, 29 Nov 2003 (UTC)

ArnoLagrange 16:08, 2 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Mahadev Desai

I've had a second look at the Desai material, and there may still be copyright problems. What I did not realize is that the book was a posthumous one. The basic rule for posthumous works for India is 60 years from the date of publication.

The only English edition that I have been able to track down was first published beginning in 1968 in Varanasi, and that opens up the question of the translator's rights and the editor's rights which may affect all or part of the work. Hmm! I've taken another look at the Indian law, and it makes no provision for derivative copyrights in a translation. Translations are by licence, and those licenses would expire with the original copyright. The editor, however, may still have rights in connection with material of his own that he has added. Whether any of Gandhi's rights are involved because this material includes transcriptions of Gandhi's correspondence could be another issue.

There was also a Gujarati language edition begun in 1948, and a romanized Gujarati edition at an unspecified date and place. If you know anything about that romanized edition it would be helpful. You may be in a better position to know how people in India have been treating this kind of material. Personally, I have no problem in pushing the copyright envelope for material that has been unavailable to the public for a long time. Eclecticology 22:35, 25 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the comments. There's nothing surprising about them.:-) It's generally the whole idea of copyrights that's screwed up. That plus we have quite a lot of people in the Wikis whose rigid misinterpretations put the letter of the law above common sense. Jimbo could probably show more courage in dealing with copyrights. When put beside the body of published work, those whose copyrights are diligently protected are actually very few. I would be a lot more open to "infringing" copyrights, as long as we do it while being fully conscious of the circumstances, and with those circumstances fully revealed at the head of our publication. I believe in a more "use-it-or-lose-it" approach to copyright. Eclecticology 13:22, 1 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Philosophie

Bonjour.

Merci. Caton 18:12, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Problem

Something is wrong with the <pre class="verse">. Yesterday I used it in some articles but today the format is different. --LadyInGrey June 26, 2005 18:34 (UTC)

Las manos: I am seeing a grey background, verses near the border and - - - - - around it. Yesterday when I saved this article the background was white, the verses weren't near the border and the - - - - - didn't be there. (I hope you can understand me)
Yes, I thought the same, thank you. :)

I notice you have written a question on Damasts talk page. Since she doesn't write english well, I'll answer for you.

I know nothing about the hymn in question, but usually when Damast blanks something she does it at the same time as she asks Christian S to delete the page for copyright reasons. Please note that although the English original might be free of copyright, this doesn't mean translations to foreign languages are. Damast goes this way, through Christian S, rather than the usual one because she doesn't feel she can write English well. All pages she asks Christian to delete, can be found listed on Category_talk:Psalmer. I'll ask her not to blank the pages, since this is the second time she gets asked about this and it apparently causes confusion. / Habj 01:50, 4 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Actually, we had the same discussion recently; you could check User_talk:ThomasV#Psalmer Damast's talk page. Anyway we will soon bli split off to a separate domain, so Damast won't have to invent special ways of doing things in order to avoid English. Until then I think this version works fine. / Habj 19:24, 4 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Templates

Hi, Yann,

The only templates I'm deleting are ones that are specific to English. Either they're templates found in English works or they're templates which would only make sense to be used to describe English works (such as Template:PD-USGov-nocat--this shouldn't appear here anymore, since this template would describe works by the US government which would always be in English). The rest I'm leaving alone.| 20:26, 24 September 2005 (UTC)

About FDNY Manhattan Office Dispatch Radio Transcript, 9/11/2001, I say we keep it for a little while, (maybe another month), and if the original contributor does not work on it, we just delete it from here. This will be the first place he looks for it, and I see no reason why we should move it to the English WS (since I highly doubt anyone will work on it).| 17:26, 25 September 2005 (UTC)

sysop nomination

I oppose the nomination of User:TheoClarke as sysop. Reasons:

  • He had about 50 edits at the time of nomination.
  • He was not supported by anyone except by you.
  • He proposed to delete a page after it was vandalized, without checking its history. I had to restore the page.

please revert this nomination if you can. ThomasV 10:02, 10 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sysop status

It was just by luck that I happened to notice your message. I apologize for not being as active as I might be. These days I spend most of my time on Wiktionary where there is very much to do. I do intend to come back for some edits, particularly for creating links between the two projects. With the partial blocking scheme that Wikisource is now considering it looks as though being a sysop may be necessary to make that kind of edit. I note with pleasure that you have finally set up side-by-side boxes for comparing texts. Eclecticology 00:38, 18 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

bot

Salutation distingué.--Tomislav Dretar 15:33, 2 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Simple English Wikisource

Thank you for your opinion. I have a different one, which happens to be supported by Wikisource:Translations (which see; feel free to comment on its talk page where I have mentioned this disagreement). English Wikisource has plenty of books that were not originally written in English, such as Don Quixote (the translation featured there, while a good one, is the only one for which the translator is known, thereby annulling the "but he's a well-known translator and your just a Wiki editor" argument). There are even translations being done directly on some Wikisources, like Basic_Law_of_the_Federal_Republic_of_Germany_(Wikisource) and s:es:Lo_malo_atrae,_pero_lo_bueno_perdura. There is even a project for it on ES Wikisource at s:es:Wikisource:Proyecto:Traducciones.

While the term "simple English" does not refer to any official variation of the language (though it is loosely based on Basic English at the moment), there are texts which are written using simplified English (such as Dr. Seuss, among others) and/or are translated into simpler English (I have heard of a book of Shakespeare like that). Both of these can be considered source text materials, not to mention the many translations we can make to help our target audience.

Simple English projects are created for those who do not know English well, whether they are non-native speakers, children, people with learning disabilities, or whatever. Those targeted who are non-native speakers do not wish to read in their own language, but do not yet have the capability (or find it very difficult) to read the English projects. For this reason, the Simple English projects have been devised. If you check up on Simple English Wikipedia, you'll find that it is a small but thriving community with a specific purpose. Other Simple English projects have not yet reached its level of success and activity, but they are working toward it. I would appreciate it if you would a) reconsider, b) see if others agree with you, and/or c) give us a chance, since this is the appropriate place for small/test Wikisources. If there can be Wikisource in Esperanto, certainly we can have one in simple English. Just because more people use Esperanto doesn't make it more valuable or viable. There are far more potential editors of the Wikisource in SE than in Esperanto. After all, you're not going to tell me that the Universala Deklaracio de Homaj Rajtoj (Universal Declaration of Human Rights) was originally written in Esperanto, are you?

Two of the SE projects have survived a closure nomination and a third is still undetermined, so it is not the concept (nor its separation from "real" English) that is the problem. Please do not try to lump them together as so many others try to do. Cheers! --Cromwellt|talk|contribs 02:49, 27 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I do not "lump them together" as you said. Translating or rewriting texts in simple English is an interesting idea, but it does not need a separate subdomain for that. I do not know any objection to host these texts to the actual English subdomain. Yann 14:21, 27 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for not lumping them together. If Simple English Wikipedia requires a separate subdomain, why do you think that Simple English Wikisource wouldn't? The reason it needs a separate subdomain (which would only happen after it got large enough to require it, anyway) is because of a basic difference in purpose and audience. The people who look for SE texts (people who don't know English well) are not looking for English texts. The people who look for English texts are not looking for SE texts. People who use the other SE projects are not going to want to look under the English Wikisource to find SE texts. It is counterintuitive. The fact that there are other SE projects (and successful ones) should be enough to prove that this project at least deserves a chance. Besides all that, this is the equivalent of the incubator for wikisources. Give us a chance to show our usefulness before discarding the idea. Incubator has lots of ideas that never make it, but they are still given a chance. Have you asked other people what they think of the idea? --Cromwellt|talk|contribs 04:27, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Splitting Pages

I had asked:

3. Wiki should give some option in which if click something like "split" on a page, it is automatically broken into individual pages of a tolerable size as per wiki norm, and an Index/ Menu is automatically created giving links of each page thus created.

You had replied:

The software can't know where to split the pages, but there is a "gadget" which might help. See the English Wikisource for examples. Yann 11:26, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

What and where I am supposed to look in english wiki?

Thanks for replying and for guiding. I have saved "Preloading gadget" given by you. Let me use it and understand its method. If anything requires further guidance, I would trouble you again. Some queries for the time being:

  1. Where can I see other gadgets that are available for my use?
There is only one gadget enabled here for now. I can enable others if you think there are useful. Tell me which ones. Yann 23:40, 23 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
  2. Scriptorium page doesn't seem to be much accessed, and it seems that only users access it. Is there any place where I can communicate with wiki admin personnel (not user sysops) to give them feedback on errors, or to suggest improvements?
Scriptorium is still the best place for that. This wiki has much less readers and contributors because a subdomain is usually created when a language gets many contributors. But several admins monitor and read the Scriptorium, and answer when appropriate. Yann 23:40, 23 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
  3. My unified account is working on 19 wiki parts. That is too much. I can't practically visit each of them often to find the errors reported on their special pages and to attend to them. Is there any method of unifying all that so that I can find special pages of all those accounts at a single place to attend?
Currently, there is no way to change that. On some wikis (meta, commons, etc.), you can choose to receive an email when your talk page is edited. Yann 23:40, 23 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. -Rawat 16:48, 21 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Mūlamadhyamakakārikā

http://wikisource.org/wiki/Mūlamadhyamakakārikā:_first_chapter_in_romanized_Sanskrit_with_diacritics
No the Sanskrit cannot be copyrighted whether in Devanagari or roman transcription with diacritics or otherwise, it would never stand in any court. I just included the critical edition notes for probity. If a person or organization were to copyright an edition of any traditional cultural artifact (bar a rendering or gloss in another language which takes considerable effort and endeavour) it wouldn't be worth the (c) symbol and it could be contested in court as unlawful, acculturating and misappropriating a traditional cultural artifact. The same precedent as folkmusic would come into effect, which cannot be copyrighted either the musical themes or motifs as well cannot be sealed by (c). If such musical themes and motif are copyrighted, upon contest it would be found indefensible. A critical edition needs to be accredited but stating that it then becomes the domain of (c) legislation is ludicrous. Let the publishers take it to court. There hasn't been a test case that I could source documented on the Internet.

complete text change

Please see the changes and my revert in અખિલ બ્રહ્માંડમાં એક તું શ્રી હરિ - from Gujarati to probably Hindi (google translator does not say too much ...). Thx -jkb- 07:34, 21 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes, right. The title is Gujarati, so the text should be Gujarati. Yann 13:09, 21 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sanskrit Wikisource

I have initiated a discussion about Sanskrit at Wikisource:Scriptorium#Sanskrit. I think it would be possible to start a new project for Sanskrit languages; i.e. possibly including Vedic Sanskrit as well. John Vandenberg 04:49, 16 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Puranas & other Sanskrit texts

I am only on a little netbook and moving large files around is problematic. I would very much appreciate if someone could populate our Wikisource Purana page with the Puranas found HERE. There are many other important files as well but it would be appreciated if the Puranas could be focused upon sooner rather than later.
Blessings

Help with harassment by cs.wikisource admins

Hi, I see you are admin of this wiki. On the local Village pump there's written: "This is the central location for discussing issues with Wikisource, and the place to ask for help." So I posted a plea for help there but noone replied. Would you please have a look? I'm being harassed by cs.wikisource admins, I was banned indef but I never did anything wrong on the wiki at all. Thanks in advance. --Auvajs (talk) 17:40, 20 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Adding new users to Canadian Wikilivres by invitation

More Chinese Wikisource users would like to add works with expired copyright in Greater China and Canada, but still copyright-restricted in the USA, so may I request adding new users to Canadian Wikilivres by invitation, please?--Jusjih (talk) 01:51, 8 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

I guess we have to solve some more urgent problems over there soon :-( -jkb- (talk) 19:06, 8 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Site hosting / Rule of the Shorter Term

Hi. I'm looking for a place to put some stuff that is between 50-70 years after the death of the author. Wikilivres looks great, but CA law does not recognize this rule on NAFTA (US/MX) publications. I also see technical/hosting issues for the Wikilivres site, if I am not mistaken? There is a better option, which is hosting in Japan that both offers "rule of the shorter term" for all jurisdictions, and has some decent hosting facilities that are fast worldwide. I would be willing to provide hosting as well as technical support so that the wikilivres (or alternative named) site would become a well-known place to host life 50 works. My contact info is in my User page: --Jeffmcneill (talk) 16:36, 10 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

*comment- canadian law doesn't have rule of the shorter term for mx & usa, because of nafta, BUT that still means the 50-year rule applies. it just means that nothing gets released sooner (even if it is already pd in the usa, for example). Lx 121 (talk) 02:55, 24 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi Jeffmcneill,
I am not able now to do anything, but it is great if you do it. Regards, Yann (talk) 20:27, 10 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi Yann, ok I will set up a mediawiki. If you have any technical detail about Wikilivres configuration detail that can help. I've done Mediawikis before, just have to get back up to speed. Once things are ready, I'd like to get a mirror of the latest backup as an archive. Let me know what I need to do/whom to contact for that. Sincerely, --Jeffmcneill (talk) 04:50, 12 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Jeffmcneill: pls mind the page Wikisource talk:Wikilivres, cheers -jkb- (talk) 10:06, 12 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi Jeffmcneill, You need to set up a reverse proxy with Squid, otherwise you would be need a much bigger system. Regards, Yann (talk) 18:28, 12 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

but yes please do! set up a japan-based version. & post the links to it here?  :) Lx 121 (talk) 02:57, 24 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Pourrais-tu lui répondre ?

Bonjour Yann,

--Zyephyrus (talk) 09:54, 30 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Was I wrong to remove the link on your user page? It opened a site uncontrolled. Do pardon me, dear Yann :) --Zyephyrus (talk) 17:42, 1 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Need your input on a policy impacting gadgets and UserJS

Dear interface administrator,

This is Samuel from the Security team and I hope my message finds you well.

There is an ongoing discussion on a proposed policy governing the use of external resources in gadgets and UserJS. The proposed Third-party resources policy aims at making the UserJS and Gadgets landscape a bit safer by encouraging best practices around external resources. After an initial non-public conversation with a small number of interface admins and staff, we've launched a much larger, public consultation to get a wider pool of feedback for improving the policy proposal. Based on the ideas received so far, the proposed policy now includes some of the risks related to user scripts and gadgets loading third-party resources, best practices for gadgets and UserJS developers, and exemptions requirements such as code transparency and inspectability.

As an interface administrator, your feedback and suggestions are warmly welcome until July 17, 2023 on the policy talk page.

Have a great day!

Samuel (WMF), on behalf of the Foundation's Security team 12:08, 10 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
