The Mythbuntu team would like to announce starting with the 12.04 release we will be moving to LTS only releases. Mythbuntu ISOs will only be released for LTS releases. MythTV packages will still be provided in the Ubuntu and Mythbuntu repositories for every Ubuntu release (both LTS and non-LTS).
  • What does this mean?
    • This means that going forward, there will no longer be Mythbuntu ISOs for releases that are not deemed LTS.
  • Does this mean I won't be able to install MythTV on a non-LTS release of Ubuntu?
    • No. The Mythbuntu team will still provide MythTV packages for non-LTS releases in the standard Ubuntu repositories and the Mythbuntu provided repositories. The only thing this changes is that Mythbuntu ISOs will not be available for non-LTS releases. Install the mythbuntu-control-centre package and configure from there.
  • But I want to install MythTV on <insert non-LTS version of Ubuntu here>
    • You can still install MythTV on non-LTS releases of Ubuntu, as the Mythbuntu team will continue to provide MythTV packages in the Ubuntu repositories for every release. We just won't be releasing Mythbuntu ISOs for every release. To install on a non-LTS release, install the mythbuntu-control-centre package and configure from there.
  • My hardware isn't recognized properly in the LTS release and only works in <insert non-LTS version of Ubuntu here>, how can I use MythTV?
    • During the LTS life cycle, there will be point releases that roll up fixes into a new ISO. There will also be backported X and kernel updates for increased hardware support in these point release. Is you have attempted the latest point release and are still running into issues, you can still install MythTV in non-LTS releases of Ubuntu. The Mythbuntu team will continue to provide MythTV packages for every Ubuntu release in the Ubuntu repositories. Install the mythbuntu-control-centre package and configure from there.
  • How will I stay up to date on MythTV releases? I want to get all the latest MythTV features!
    • The Mythbuntu team provides the Mythbuntu repositories, which contain the latest MythTV release for LTS releases. Using this method, you can stay up to date with the latest version of MythTV while staying on the stable underlying LTS release.
  • LTS releases are usually every two years, while MythTV releases are more frequent. How can I stay up to date on MythTV if you only release for LTS releases?
    • The Mythbuntu team will still provide the Mythbuntu repositories which include newer MythTV releases for previous distro releases. See Mythbuntu repositories for more info
  • Why are you doing this?
    • Releasing ISOs requires a lot of work for testing, bug fixes, etc, and the Mythbuntu team is formed by a very small group of volunteers. The time spent working on releasing ISOs can be better used to make the software better. The nature of MythTV (something that should be considered an appliance) and using resources we have built up in the past allows moving to this longer release schedule with little impact to the enduser.
  • I didn't realize the Mythbuntu team was so small. How can I help?
    • The Mythbuntu team is also looking for help in every aspect (testing, documentation, support, development). To get involved join us in our IRC channel on irc.freenode.net at #ubuntu-mythtv-dev or on our mailing list. You can also take a look at our getting involved page.
