Summary:“We rest in the shade of trees our ancestors planted.”
They called the man in the ice Yiling Laozu, after a folk hero associated with the town in the foothills of the mountains where he was found.
No one expected him to be alive!
Kay"s comments: I have never been less surprised to see that a story was written by a PhD student. The end notes at the end of each chapter are very extensive and just amazing. So much information, so much research, 363k of an incredible story that had me completely hooked. I read it in a week and could hardly focus on anything else, because that story was just so present in the back of my mind and I wanted to know what would happen next. Got introduced to the story by the stunning art by @toffee-arts. I loved the entire plotline of Wei Wuxian having to first learn modern Chinese in order to speak to the scientists (and mostly Lan Zhan) who decided to thaw his supossed corpse. I love how it all came together, how it all wrapped up neatly and the slow burn! The slow burn almost killed me! And how cultivation just awed everyone in modern day!! I just know this story is going to be a favourite I will re-read again and again and there are certainly a lot of details I must have missed during my obsessed binge.
Excerpt: Everyone in the observation room tensed. This was, after all, the most delicate point. If it wasn’t going to be possible to remove the ice without beginning to thaw Yiling Laozu, they would have to move very quickly to preserve some of the data they wanted. The cellular damage caused by the freezing process meant that once the ice thawed, the damage would spread rapidly.
Lan Wangji glanced at Wen Yuan. “Leave if you need to,” he told the boy quietly.
Wen Yuan shook his head. “No, I want to stay…”
Lan Wangji wasn’t certain what caught his attention – a flicker of movement from the corner of his eye, a hint of sound, a flash of intuition.
He looked up to see Lan Xichen slam into the window. Drop out of sight, stunned by the impact. Beyond, shards of shattered ice fell from black robes scattered across the floor as Yiling Laozu’s body tumbled off the lab table—
Twisted. Landed on his feet. Stood.
Piercing silvery-grey eyes flickered across the room, wary and confused.
Lan Wangji froze. Yiling Laozu was awake.
…Yiling Laozu was alive.

Original rec by Kay. Bookmarked on September 28, 2024.
Mojo’s comments: This was AMAZING and I read the whole thing in a two-day binge and loved every minute of it. Probably 110k of that word count are the author’s notes, which were filled with research, musing and meta that was absolutely fascinating. I kept thinking, ‘I’ll skip the notes, so I can see what happens next in the story,’ but then the Notes would suck me in, and I’d be lost. Author is very saturated in academia and research, and it shows.
The story itself follows from wwx being found in ice after 1500 years… and then reanimating when they thaw the ice to begin research on his things and his corpse. To the surprise of everyone, including himself. There’s drama from the first moment (A-Yuan is saved, lwj falls in love, and wwx is introduced to the modern world through realizing that there are good and bad people in it, just the same.)
I’m not gonna write more, just because reading it was exhausting, and now I wanna go on a long walk and just, do that Kermit Thinking Meme, and process it.

Hi! I’d like to submit a story. I found this just a very, very sweet story for WangXian during the Cloud Recesses days, where they go to visit a fortune teller for their romantic forecasts and come away with very different takeaways. @mikkeneko
Summary: “Ah, Lan Zhan, you will not believe what kind of divination I got! Now I feel embarrassed for dragging you here.”
Lan Wangji raised an eyebrow, an unpleasant feeling in his chest. There was a distinct impression of Wei Ying’s dramatics hiding true disappointment.
“You know what she said?” Wei Ying asked, with levity in his voice that was so perfect Lan Wangji could have been fooled, had it not been for the way Wei Ying kept his gaze away from him. “I’m never going to get married!”
or, lwj and wwx visit a fortune teller

Summary: Wei Wuxian is a good for nothing, possibly evil, possibly fake uncle. But he’s Jin Ling’s good for nothing, possibly evil, possibly fake uncle. So it stands to reason that when Jin Ling starts to suspect that Hanguang-jun is mistreating his husband, he immediately recruits Jiang Cheng for a rescue mission.
Summary: When Wei Wuxian, the god of death, meets Lan Wangji, the god of vegetation, the last thing he expects is to be swept off his feet.
Unfortunately, the rest of the world is less accepting of their courtship. Denied permission to marry, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji elope. The other gods, furious with this blatant act of disobedience, declare war on the underworld, and vow to punish Wei Wuxian for kidnapping the honorable Hanguang-jun.
Wei Wuxian finds this rather unfair. If anything, Lan Wangji is the one who kidnapped him!
Summary: The bundle of mail from the Qinghe Nie Sect arrives in Cloud Recesses late one evening. All but one piece of the pile is a stack of invitations to this year’s Cultivation Conference, wrapped in light blue string. The last is a short, handwritten list wedged between two envelopes, unnoticeable until it flutters to the floor.
(Or: the juniors stage a tiny, benevolent rebellion.)
Hello! Thank you so much for your hard work in this fandom. Always appreciate this blog x I recently finished an incredible fic I would highly recommend to any wangxian fan. It’s two chapters away from completion at over 225k words. (Someone might already have recced this one, but if not it deserves to be!) I just fell in love with the relationship development, character study, and plot. @classygreydove
Summary:Wei Wuxian grits his teeth, knowing he has no other choice. Not if it means Lan Zhan’s life. Besides, the Cloud Recesses has the best library and a long history of dealing with curses. It’s the most logical choice, even if he’d like to punch logic in the face right now.
“Wei Ying?” Lan Zhan asks.
He gives him a grim smile. “Looks like you’re finally getting your wish, Lan Zhan.”
Lan Zhan stares back at him, expression blank.
“I’m coming to Gusu with you.”
Or: Lan Wangji gets hit with a curse that requires Wei Wuxian to stay in close proximity at all times. Everything only gets more complicated from there.

Summary: “Wei Ying. Good morning. I assumed you had the same sex education as I had, and thus did not need to be informed of the existence of the prostate.”
“Not the existence, Lan Zhan, of course I knew they existed! I mean that it"s…” Wei Ying trails off, looking at Lan Zhan imploringly. “Like that.”
Kay’s comments: If you’re OK with both Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji having sexual relationships with other people before getting together, then this story is a treat! It was really fun to read about Wei Wuxian discovering the prostate and my heart goes out to the girl who enlightened him and then had a short night because Wei Wuxian was too flabbergasted to continue. Really applauding Lan Wangji for holding back as long as he managed to do so.
Excerpt: Lan Zhan wakes up and finds a text from Wei Ying that had come in at 1:32 am. “SOS pls make reservation at that bougie place you like for 11 tmrw. I am in CRISIS.”
Lan Zhan does not bother to speculate on the nature of Wei Ying’s crisis. Given the timing, Wei Ying had surely been drunk, and brunch means a non-emergency. Beyond that, Lan Zhan could never predict where Wei Ying’s focus would land and what he would deem a "crisis.”
He makes a reservation and turns his mind to more productive things. He will find out when he sees Wei Ying.

Neither Jin Ling nor Jiang Cheng say anything, continuing to stare at Wei Wuxian with incredulity.
“Look,” Wei Wuxian says nervously, “Lan Zhan said that he loved me and wanted to date me. Two hours ago, I thought he despised me.” He then shrugs as if to emphasize his point. As if that ‘point’ explains anything.
“So you bought a donkey,” Jiang Cheng says.
“Yes, I bought Li’l Apple.”
“Jin Ling, stop gawking and close your mouth.”
-
Wei Wuxian has a moment of panic. Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng have to deal with it.
Summary: “Lan Zhan, look at this,” Wei Wuxian calls. “They don’t have organs, but they’re all… fuzzy.” He gently strokes the corpse’s arm – it’s covered in soft, pigmentless downy hair, like a rabbit. Lan Wangji crouches next to him and nods. “Lanugo,” he says. Wei Wuxian raises one eyebrow. “They were malnourished for quite a while before death,” Lan Wangji elaborates. Wei Wuxian scans the bodies again. Indeed, they both have sunken cheeks, and their abdomens are empty of both organs and fat padding. “That’s a question,” he says. “Did they starve to death, and have their bodies desecrated after they were already deceased? Or were they murdered, and simply starving at the same time?” “We should stay,” Lan Wangji tells him. This is not an answer to his question. It is an offer to search for answers.
Or: Wei Wuxian and his family solve a ghost haunting. Wei Wuxain’s old enemy, societal injustice, rears its head again.
Summary: “Yes, Clan Leader Jiang. It is most regrettable, but the Yiling Patriarch has once again kidnapped His Excellency. However, we have every confidence in His Excellency’s safe eventual return.”
“Of course you do,” Jiang Cheng says bitterly. “You get a more agreeable Chief Cultivator, and everyone is happy, right? You are all so happy the Yiling Patriarch kidnaps the Chief Cultivator on a regular basis. How can you not delight in the fact that Wei Wuxian has no shame and is revered for it? Aren’t you all thrilled, thrilled, that Lan Wangji is such good friends with Wei Wuxian that they spend so many friendly nights together and His Excellency returns like a lovesick fool afterwards and is so conveniently more agreeable?”
“…”
“I hate you all,” Jiang Cheng declares and stomps off.
Summary: “You’ve got a fever,” Wei Wuxian says soothingly. “You just keep still as well as you can. We’ll have you fixed up soon.”
Lan Sizhui recognizes his tone—this is the voice that Wei Wuxian uses on hurt people and young children, a very calm and no-nonsense voice that has none of the mischief and cheer of the way he sounds the rest of the time. Lan Sizhui looks up and meets his eyes, and they are dark, stormy gray, muddled and concerned.
“I’m all right,” he croaks.
“Hush,” Wei Wuxian says, in a low croon, like someone quieting a baby. Then he blinks, and looks away, awkward. “I mean—you shouldn’t speak. You’re tired. Rest if you need to.”
—
lan sizhui gets sick on a night hunt. wei wuxian comforts him. they both have a lot of feelings about it.
Summary: If Lan Wangji had been asking for reasons of fame or money or power (not that he was suffering a shortage of any of those attributes) that would have been one thing. But siblings were a different story entirely. If Jiang Cheng and Yanli were sick, then Wei Wuxian probably would have done just about anything to get those flowers.
“Huh,” Wei Wuxian said. “Alright, you can have them.”
Lan Wangji’s eyes went wide, and Wei Wuxian choked. “I mean-! You can have them if you become my prisoner forever!”
—
In which Lan Wangji, famed Second Jade of Lan, is not actually taken captive by the fearsome Demon Beast of Yiling. But for some reason, he stays anyways.

There’s also adorable Mamaxian-coded shenanigans with A-Yuan, they’re simply adorable! @guangshi-091305
Summary: It had been over 200 years since the war between cultivators left more than half the land ravaged and uninhabitable and the practice of cultivation punishable by death.
Despite the risks of being caught as a practicing cultivator, Wei Wuxian took on the hunt of a dangerous yao that had destroyed a small village and killed all of the civilians. While searching for the demon, he encountered a mysterious cultivator dressed all in white. Wei Wuxian was excited to finally meet another cultivator, but instead of greeting him or making pretty much any conversation at all, the man attacked Wei Wuxian on sight.
- - - - - -
There is NO WAR in this fic. This takes place two centuries after the war happened, and it has a sort of post apocalyptic vibe. This is a story of rebuilding and finding safety. It’s about found family and forming a new society away from the old one that persecuted them.

Just read this fic and it’s absolutely hilarious, the first half has jzx giggling and kicking his feet snd then the last chapters are a bunch of funny miscommunication that has him heartbroken
Jyl is amazing on this one too, I’ve missed seeing her a a caring older sister and an amazing girl, I do think that anyone who likes her at least a bit will enjoy this @menimimimeni
Summary: Jin Zixuan is hoping that his engagement to Jiang Yanli will be cancelled after his fight with Wei Wuxian. Instead, much to his frustration, he finds himself being forced to exchange regular letters with her.
He is expecting little from this correspondence. The last thing he expects is to be dragged into a matchmaking scheme to pair Wei Wuxian up with Lan Wangji of all people.
