gnoot (2022 github gameoff)
Homage to the original Knytt, made for 2022 Github Game-off.
Explore the location to gather 7 gubbins.
Controls:
- arrows - run (left/right) and climb (up/down)
- space - jump (hold for higher)
- shift - tracker module, to locate the gubbins
Climbing:
Bump into walls to start climbing them. Push an arrow key away from the wall to drop/kick off. You will auto-drop when climbing down past the bottom of the wall; likewise you will auto-hop when climbing up past the top of a wall.
Github Game-off 2022 theme: Cliché
Short version:
- Style & genre : 2D pixel art platformer (style & genre both considered very cliché aujourd'hui)
- Jam approach, part 1: Trying to make your own version of an older game you love during a game jam. ("How cliché!") (And possible bonus points for "lack of original thought" in copying another game's mechanics instead of thinking up new ones?)
- Jam approach, part 2: Trying to make a largish world alone during a game jam, while learning a new library & tools. ("We know it's dangerous, so why do we keep doing it?") (But I feel like maybe it doesn't count as a cliché unless I complain about the situation.)
- Some applicable cliché phrases:
- "As far as the eye can see" (a bit literal here -- the camera doesn't move until you exit the edge of the screen)
- "A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step"
- Silent Protagonist, Permanent Placeholders, etc
Long version:
I want to write a blog posty thing on here about the value of clichés and subversion of them and the original Knytt specifically (you start going LEFT! you don't die when you touch the bottom of the screen! etc) but would you read it?
